Towing with Super Stock turbo!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just swapped my HTB2 62/14 for a Super Stock 62/24 LDP from High Tech. It is a big improvement..... The 62/14 was a good turbo, but this new one spools twice as fast & runs way cooler. The hills that I use to climb & see 1200* are now @ 950*. I was towing 15k down route 68 in West Virginia today & taking 5% grades 5 miles long like a stroll through the park. I saw 1000* max where I use to see 1250*+. I just want to thank Paul @ High Tech turbo for a great product & the service is top notch. :D :D :D

Is that the new High Tech series turbo they just started advertising on their site? I'm probably going to go with that myself, glad to hear it works well. I talked to Dennis for quite a while the other day both about a towing turbo and the DD jammer they had to rebuild for me

Yes, it is the super stock turbo that they are advertising. Paul made my turbo as a low drive pressure unit to get me the faster spool up. I have the 24 housing which I believe is also called the 82 housing. I've tried the 64/14 htb2, the 62/12htb2 & 62/14htb2, but none of them even compared to the LDP unit for towing.

That I am not sure of, but I know that Paul can help you out. I do know that they have different ones available. I would get the 62/24 LDP before anything else after driving one. The smaller the housing size... . The faster the spool, but the bigger the housing size = more flow = cooler EGT's. The larger the turbine wheel also = cooler EGT's, because you are moving more air. You need to find a happy medium... which is why I've tried so many different turbos. I think I've found it now!

How well does boost build at lower rpms?

And how are EGT's at lower rpms/boost?

I would compare it to the 62/14 HTB2 that I had before. It comes in @ around 1300 - 1400 RPM, but once it lights off... . It goes to 45psi. before the 62/14 would get to 20psi. It seriously could be compared to sitting in the driveway revving the engine & watching the tachometer jump up. That is a good comparison, but this turbo builds boost that fast with a trailer on the back. Today I tried it out on wet roads & it lit so fast that I had to shut the box off. The truck kept wanting to fry the tires off when the turbo spooled. I have 150 sticks... . maybe that is why it is so quick, but damn do I love this thing. No more hoping that I can make boost before my EGT's get out of control. Now when I hit a hill... . I just hope that I loaded the excavator forward enough on the trailer to keep my tires from frying!!

Great to know, can't wait to get one. What housing sizes are available for the super stock? Thanks.

Pretty much the . 8A/R which is what everyone refers to as the 14cm. You can get them in the . 7A/R but it kind of defeats the purpose of the low pressure wheel.

Yeah, those 150 sticks will make a difference.

I only have 85 hp sticks. So I wouldn't get the same affect. But as long as I get good clean spool low/fast enouhg for towing, this might be my answer (along with the 3rd gen exhaust brake ;) )

I think that you would be ok with the 85hp. sticks... Maybe a little slower than I am. If you can't get it to spool till 1450... I think that you will still be happy when it lights off. The problem that I was having with the other turbos that I tried is on a hill from a dead stop. The other turbos would come in fast, but slowly build boost. This turbo comes in about 150RPM's slower, but flies after that to 45psi. I am ahead of the heat with the big turbine wheel. The larger housing is a must if you go with a super turbo too. If you need any advise/info. on the 3rd gen brake mounting..... Let me know. I'd be glad to help a TDR brother out. :D

Don't forget that I have the HRVP44 as well. So I will have more fuel then just the 85 hp sticks. Not exactly sure what it would equate to, but it sounds pretty darn close!

Plus the 6spd will help me keep the right rpms. But I think that is more of a bandaid approach. I would rather have the RIGHT turbo for the job.

And EGT control while loaded is my top priority. Which also seems to be at the top of your list as well.

As for the brake mounting, I will have a few more questions for you, but not too soon. I can't drop the coin right now for a turbo and brake (or either right now). Starting a business sure sucks out all your extra $ :(

I totally understand... . I am a business owner myself. Between a rock & a hard place is the town I grew up in. The Fiance wanting to make wedding plans, down payments on halls & Catering etc. are killing my wallet. I just do a little side job here & there to make my "truck money". I can't tell her about that though... . I just say that my truck broke down again & I need a part. That way when the parts come in there are no questions... ... She thinks that my truck is a Lemon.
