Just towed for the first time with my 3500 SRW 4X4. I have the SO with a 48RE and a Mag-hytec transmission pan. The new transmission is awesome; pulled a 20 mile 4. 5% grade and a 16 mile 5% grade and the pan temp never got above 170 degrees; most of the time it ran under 140 degrees. I'm towing a 10,000 lb 5th wheel.
The transmission held OD on all but moderate grades at almost any crusing speed. My old 98. 5 with a 47RE would never hold OD when towing. Even with a Banks system it would still downshift on slight grades, only after I added injectors would it hold in OD.
My 47RE was beefed with a BD converter, valve body and pressure lock and still went instantly to 220 degrees as soon as it was out of lockup. I could pull steep grades in 2nd at about 35 mph and the trans temp was in the red. The new 03 pulled the steepest grade at 45mph with no problem and no overheating.
I thought I made a mistake not waiting for the HO ( I'm in CA) but the SO with the 48RE has more than enough power to meet all my needs. I got 10. 8 mpg towing at 60 mph and 18. 8mpg unloaded.
