What follows was a question I posed to Toyo Canada about manufacturing a M-55 tire in 285-75/17. He answered these questions today, on a Sunday, no less.
Me: Is there any chance of getting an M-55 in the 285/75R17 size? Thanks.
Tech: Toyo Tires reviews new size requests several times per year to determine if a new size is justified in a particular pattern.
There is a meeting coming up in March and we will review this size for the M55 pattern at that time.
Sales volume and market popularity are considered for each new size request.
If a new size is required, building design features and new molds are required prior to release in the market.
The LT285/75R17 10pr size is currently available in the Toyo Open Country A/T and MT patterns.
Thank you for considering Toyo Heavy Duty Light Truck Tires.
Me: Thanks John! On a Sunday, no less. Yes, I currently have the O/C A/T in that size on my truck. I was looking for a harder compound for longer mileage. I also know there is considerable interest in that size on the M-55 in the U. S. as I'm a member of the Turbo Diesel Register.
Tech: Popularity in the US is actually very important due to the volume potential.
If the US requests it along with Canada there is a better chance of Toyo producing the size.
The Open Country MT doesn’t have a harder compound but does have deeper tread depth (more life?).
I will definitely bring the size request to the meeting and see where it takes us.
