Well here's the deal. Two years ago I made the switch to LT285/75R17 tires. I went with the Toyo AT's and only got 29,500 miles out of the 50,000 miles they are rated for. The tires were rotated every 5,000 miles. All miles were on the road miles except for the ocasional gravel road. I am looking at replacing these but have found out that there are only a handfull of tires in this size. If I had know this I would of never switched to the bigger tire. Anyway it comes down to either replacing the Toyo's with Toyo's or going with the Nitto Terra Grapplers or Dura Grapplers. Does anyone have any good advice on these tires. I tow a heavy 5'er in the summer and snowmobiles in the winter otherwise I am unloaded. Please help.

My friend had Nitto AT's on his 97 2500, wore out really fast, I don't think he got 25K out of them. Another buddy has Toyo AT's and they are holding up well, same size as yours. Not sure about his mileage.

I do know that I have just over 31K on my Toyo MT's, have about 1/4" tread left, and that's with 3-4K gravel road miles. I don't know if the AT's would hold up to that hard use, but the MT's sure wear well with zero trouble, just rotate every 6k (at every oil change... ). You probably don't want the MT's if you are on the road a lot, but I'll bet they'll outlast the AT's all around. Plus, they're the only real MT 285's with load range E and 10 P. R.

i can tell you that as of right now, both of those tires in that size are on national backorder. i have a set of the terra's 285/75 17 on order and still waiting. i'm not happy to hear they don't wear well. it wouldn't be worth the wait for that. .

20k my Toyo AT's were at the wear bars, rotated 5/6k. I was not pleased with their wear, ride and balance were great. The local Les Schwab knocked off $45. 00 a tire on the MT's trying to keep me as a customer, these howl a bit on the hiway, not real bad, but noticable. Hope they wear better.

i have had a set of the toyo's and got about 35 k out of them... didn't rotate as much as i should of but thought they wore out too fast... . switched to the nitto dura grappler and like much better. . especially when it snows. better traction than i had with the toyo's. . better price... current set has approx 40k and still have maybe 10k more in, they ride and drive nice and look better i think. i have rotated at approx every 7k??. . check out this link... don't know if in stock but nice price. .

Well, I'm not sure what you guys are doing, but I've got several sets of 265/70R17s, 325/70R17s, 285/75R17s, 315/75R16s, 235/85R16, 285/75R16s on the road in Toyo H/Ts, A/Ts, and M/Ts. They have all worn more than 30k miles for my customers, and most go over 40k. My personal '03 3500 4x4 wore it's first set of 265/70R17s out in 43K. Part of that was lack of proper rotation on my part. The two fronts had decent tread, and have been kept for spares on other trucks. Anyway, the M/Ts have worn even better, with all my customer's trucks running over 40k miles. Several have run over 50k, though I can't say I wouldn't have replaced them before that, personally. The Toyo H/Ts have run up to 55k on a dually and 62k on a trailer. The Nitto's I can't say good or bad about, yet. I have three sets out on customers trucks, and they all like them, but none of them have reached mileage limits, yet. The only complaints I've had have been on the Toyo A/Ts wearing on the front, which I believe to be from lack of rotation, and the Toyo M/Ts riding rough from a stiffer sidewall. I'm sure the same would be true for the Nitto's, as they have the extra sidewall plys in the Grapplers.

I have a had a few sets of nitto dura grapplers and get atleast 40k out of them and im not easy on them. great overall traction in wet and in snow, nice ride and quiet. mud not so well but better than the stock tires.

Wow you guys must be hard on your tires. I am on my second set of Toyo AT's and love them. My first set went 45K and I could of pushed it to 50 but with winter coming last year I replaced them. Mine run quiet and are great in snow and ice. I run 60lbs all the way around all the time.

It all depends on how much power you are running and how much weight you are pulling.

I recently took a 10,000 mile trip to Alaska in July. I started out with 285/75 Toyo A/Ts with only a few thousand miles on them. About 7,000 miles into the trip, the rear tires were down to the wear bars. That being said, I grossed at 20,325 lbs, and maintained 55 mph + up every grade that we came to. That's just plain hard on tires. We also ran about 500 miles of gravel and dirt road, but I had it in 4wd the whole time to minimize wear on the rear tires.

I normally run 37x13. 50 Toyo M/Ts and they seem to wear much better than the A/Ts and are not much louder.

Nitto dura grapplers, I have about 30,000 miles and around half tread left, enough for another season of driving/towing, but not enough tread for our winters here. Just bought a set of blizzaks on spare wheels for winter to extend life of Nittos. Love the Nittos!!

I had the Toyo 285-75-17 when I drove out of Alaska and had the same results as ENafzinger. I had a gross load of 19K and pulled greater than 55 mph too. I was a one way traveler and my tires were half gone by the time I arrived in New Mexico, with a stop for tire rotation on the drive too. I only got about 28K on the set with rotating at longest every 5K trying to wear them even and make them last.

I was not going to try the same size tire from Nitto or Toyo and decided to try a tire that is 1" wider to disperse the weight maybe a little better. I am now running Nitto Dura Grappler in the 305-70-17 and have 10K on them with 8K towing or so. They are doing much better than the Toyo's were with the same milage, so I am hopeful that they will last a little longer. They are an 'E' rated tire, but max inflation is only 65psi.

how do the 305-70-17's compare to the 285's as far as sticking out past the fenders? did you have to add flares to keed the dirt off the side of the truck?

thanks

Thanks for all the replies. From reading these and other posts through the search function it sounds to me like some last longer than others and vise versa. It also sounds like maybe there have been some bad batches of tires that have come out otherwise why would there be such a big variance in the wear of them. I too tow heavy but keep the tires at the max air pressure when doing so and rotate when I am supposed to. There is probably 5 to 10,000 miles left on them which would work for summer time but not nearly enough for the winter. I think that I have decided to try the Nitto Terra Grapplers when they become available.

Did you have to change your speedometer back when you went back to the 70 tire size? Also do you notice any difference in you power steering with the wider tire?

I have considered the Toyo MT's from reading that they seem to wear a little better but also have been told that they will wear out faster when towing and that the side walls have more flex in them which is not good when towing. . I have a 38foot toy hauler that when loaded is around 16 to 18,000 lbs. However all that weight is not right on the tires just the tounge weight. Decisions, decisions.

I have the orginal all season Michelin's on my 07 with 33k and I tow/haul 6k miles per yr 10 to 11k in trailer. I rotate every 7500 miles. Still have plenty of life in these tires. Why would anyone want to go to these exotic tires. Michelin is the only tire I will put on my vehicles.

2500, 4x4, 6. 7 automatic, hd, quad cab.

I did not change the speedometer this time as it was changed for the 285-75 and the 305-70 is just slightly larger. I think . 1" is all. I already had fender flares on the truck, but I do not notice any more dirt on the rockers or doors than normal. I have the flares and the rockers done with bedliner and all is normal with that too. I had that done because the rear flares with the 285's were losing the paint on the front edge and I did not want to keep painting them every few years. Also, I have noticed no difference with power steering effort or noise with the wider tires on there.

Try Michleins. My LTX have 56k on them and I am about to make my 4th round trip to Az. from Alaska on them.

They look real good yet.

Spendy but they last longer.
