Toyota Motor Corp. announced Tuesday morning it was buying a stake in Isuzu Motors Ltd. and that the two companies would consider collaborating on engine technologies.

Toyota will buy shares of Isuzu from Mitsubishi Corp. , giving Toyota a 5. 9% stake in Isuzu, according to a joint statement issued by Toyota and Isuzu.

The deal announced Tuesday is a basic agreement to study the possibility of working together on engine technologies. Isuzu would take the lead on joint diesel projects. Toyota would take the lead on environmental technologies, such as basic engines and alternative fuels.

The collaboration could provide Toyota help in accelerating development of new diesel engines, one of the few areas where Toyota trails much of the competition.

In a conference call with analysts, Toyota senior managing director Takeshi Suzuki would not say whether these diesel engines could go into Toyotas new full-size trucks. Details have not been worked out, Suzuki said.

General Motors Corp. , Ford Motor Co. and the Chrysler Group, though, all offer diesels in their full-size trucks, a key option that many analysts say will help Detroits automakers continue to hold their lead in the market.
