I want one of these!

Interesting Ford Diesel Option

I'm at Toyota Hybrid training, and were reviewing some new scan tool items, and there it was on the drop down diagnostic menu--- Diesel SCR. So I'm not alone when we start quizzing the instructor about WHY would there be such an item in North American (OBDII) diagnostics? and he said it's coming. And soon. He couldn't say what platform or model, but the Toyota Diesel is on its way.

Like the Nissan Titan HD CTD, it will be so expensive, why bother getting one. Unless there in a 3/4 to 1 ton package, why pay the premium. This exact reason is why I bought a Tacoma, instead of the Titan HD. I already own a 3500, so why would I pay 50K for a 5/8 ton truck. The Titan is not a 1/2 ton nor a 3/4 ton, and is in between @ 5/8 ton. My Tacoma was perfect in price and what I need for it to do, so I wasn't going to pay 50K for a Diesel truck, at that price I could easily buy a 2500 CTD and maybe even a 3500 CTD. So I balked at the thought of getting a Titan HD. This will be the case for a Toyota Diesel as well, unless they step into a 3/4 ton class.

i'd buy a toyota diesel in a heart beat. i had one back in the early 90's i can't remember the year, was a 2wd 4 cylinder 5 speed diesel great little truck. however if they try and put one in the tundra, no thanks. i'd be after a midsize truck one.

Guys are liking the Colorado diesel with good reviews.
My former employer is using Hino's by Toyota with great success. The drivers and especially management are very happy with them. Stop and go and shutting them down when hot is the norm.
However, the drivers must go to the mechanics and get their DEF tank refilled.
Already too many screwups.

Not saying it's a truck. It could be anything. Also while on the topic of joint ventures, he said they were doing something with Mazda, which I thought was dabbling in Diesel as well.

Mazda? Are we going to hear that Ford owns Toyota as well. :D

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Sure, he was rattling off other strange bedfellows also. And about how the Japanese gov forces car companies to help each other out. So different from the American way of competition.

I read an article over the summer that quoted the CEO of Toyota announcing a joint partnership with Mazda to develop and build EV's in the US. It'll be interesting if Toyota does build a diesel how similar it is to Mazda Sky Activ D set to be released next year. Mazda put some serious R&D in on that one. Speaking of Mazda, anyone see the specs on the new Sky Activ X(gas engine)? 14:1 compression ratio, Large cavity domed pistons, multi hole injectors. Mazda has some fascinating technology under their hoods lately.

Anybody remember this?

No mention of this by the man, but what I find interesting is that Toyota is investing in Diesel!

I'm happy to see more and more manufacturers jumping on board. The more the market is flooded the more affordable they will become. Hyundai also has some CUV's in the works with the oil burner option, around 2019. Exciting times!

From the article,

Debuting at major auto shows including those in Detroit, New York and Los Angeles, this new fleet of CUVs will maintain Hyundai’s promise to make customer’s lives and driving experiences better. Further, Hyundai will be the only manufacturer offering CUV customers four different fuel choices.

I also am glad to see other mfg's get on the diesel band wagon. However, if this is Toyota's attempt to compete with the Titan, I'm pretty sure it'll flop for the reasons already mentioned........

To date I've only seen roughly 4-5 Nummins on the road here in California.

I saw my first "Nummins" the other day at a Diesel pump when I was gassing Hoopty up......not all that impressed with the looks of it....Pass...

I got my popcorn ready because I want to see if the Prius people get attacked like VW et al.
I agree Mazda has some imagination lately.

X2.
When I was at Cat, this was always a major concerned with the Japanese heavy equipment manufactures. Cat has/had a joint venture with Mitsubishi, manufacturing excavators. One of the major marketing concerns was the sharing of technical information by Mitsubishi with other equipment manufactures. We always referred to Japanese heavy equipment companies as Japan INC, the entire structure of their manufacturing philosophies is totally different than the US and the rest of the world.

On the Mazda note, isn’t Ford part owner of Mazda, or at least the small pickups are Ford Rangers badged as Mazda. My POC Ford Courier with a 2300cc gas engine was a dog compared to the Mazda version with a 2000cc engine.

Im not aware of anything other than a partnership between the two but they went separate ways in 2013. Mazda CEO siting differing priorities on future engine tech.
From the looks of things Ford should have hung around, they could have learned a thing or two.

Yes JR I think is right. You don't see joint vehicles between ford and Mazda anymore. And Mazda is done with trucks. Probably the best child out of that relationship is the Escape 1 and 2 gen. including the Hybrids. They are robust and lasting very well- and standing up to NYC taxi service too.

I swapped a 2300 into a 72 Mazda pick up.With a few simple mods that truck would spin the tires (31 inch),2,3 was and still is a very dependable power plant
