Anyone out there have any experience with the '83 - '87 Toyotas with 4 cyc diesels?

I may have a chance to buy an '84 - it already has 205,000 miles on it, 4x4 w/ ac.

Just wondering.

My dad bought his 85 Toyota diesel new from the dealer in Hot Springs Ark. The dealer told him later that it was the first and the last of the diesels sold in the state of Arkansas. But anyway, dad's truck is still on the road with approx 230,000 and doing very well. It has had the injector pump replace or what they called rebuilt twice and I am not sure if those idiots knew what they were doing. Dad has changed the glow plugs, timing belt and clutch in that many miles. His fuel mileage is about 25-28 town/highway. So yes if the truck looks good and sounds good. . I would make him a offer...

I think the one I had was an 81', non turbo, five speed. Had trouble with the syncro's at 50k, patched it up and got another 50 or so on before I sold it. Later heard there was a recall for that. Hard to understand but I guess it must have been the torque that contributed to the transmission trouble. Overall, it was the slowest slug I ever owned. Had a 30 mile commute at the time. If I kept the cap off, I would see 40mpg. I sold it at 105k I think. Used to see it around for years afterwards. I would make sure parts are still available for it.

I have rode in several Toyota diesel pickups/land cruisers in Africa. None of them had a turbocharged engine, but ran great and hardly burned any fuel. They were so quiet, I first thought they were gas engines.

In the third world, the Toyota is king.

Toyota's

Hey, If its a Toyota you can't go wrong, Those people can build reliable vechicles. I have owned several cars and trucks presently own a Avalon, Have never had one in for repairs, knock on wood. :)

My buddy had one, I believe it was an 86. It had over 100,000 on it. He had a glasspack/race muffler with teh core burned out, boy did it sound like a beast:rolleyes: It only lasted about 6 months though. He had the pump rebuilt and they asked him if he wanted more fuel, he said "as much as she'll stand. " Needless to say, it smoked like a freight train and then quit running all of a sudden. He never tore it apart but I think there's a hole in one of the pistons. He didn't have a Pyrometer or anything, talk about a waste of a motor. Oh well, just glad it wasn't a Cummins:p

I drove an '81 Toy 2x4 diesel with a 5 speed for about 3 years. At about 85K miles it started using oil. It got about 25 city 35 hwy, but was sluggish from the first day. I BOMBed it with a Buick 3. 8L V6 and auto which improved it considerably!! They used to (maybe still do) make a kit to put a 350cid in one :D

Thanks for the replies guys.

I should know in the next couple of days if I'll get it or not - Not sure if the guy will decide to sell or the price yet. .

:p
