Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Potentiometer to replace bad TPS

engine squealing sound

Hello folks,

A couple years back I posted a thread regarding the trans OD and lockup issues.
https://www.turbodieselregister.com/threads/throttle-position-sensor-wrong-voltage.268016/page-3

I did the TPS delete and it has worked fine all this time until recently.
My guess is the potentiometer has begun to fail, as I have to keep doing a "clearing" wiper rotation and reset the position on the dial.

I did not buy a assembled kit from a retailer...I just grabbed a linear 5K ohm pot from my parts stash.
It was not a sealed pot. I'm thinking since to pot is mounted to the bottom edge of the dash, it may be subject to more dirt/dust than a dash mount location.

Can anyone here having done the delete share their experience regarding the pot life?

Im considering ordering a better pot, sealed type (more expensive). I don't believe the wattage rating is critical because I cant imagine there is much load since it is for a computer signal.

Any thoughts?

Pots get dirty, ESPECIALLY when they aren’t in a dust resistant housing. Deoxit is what i use professionally in my line of work to keep scratchy pots at bay every time i open any equipment for cleaning. Sealed 10 turn pots are easily avalible at any real eclectical supply house, would greatly extend your service life.

Thanks for sharing the link. I'm looking at installing the TPS delete.

Hello Drag. Yes, I, aware DEOIXIT, I have a can here on my electrics bench. It is my go to cleaner/lube. I did use it to no avail....that's why im looking to get a new pot. Thanks for the tip about using a multi turn pot...I used a single turn I had on my bench, but I have found it a bit touchy.

Outside of TPS Delete topic. Would you be aware of any need to adjust or rotate the stock TPS when installing it, or should it simply be attached in the same direction that it was in upon removal. One reason I ask is I have noticed examples of a TPS orientated in different directions. Does it make a difference.
