Hi- I have reviewed the posts and all regarding TPS problems. I have a 98. 5 24V, 3500, 4WD, Gale Banks Stage 3 kit installed. Transmission rebuilt 3 years ago and was built by a very good shop. No problems until last week. Truck "kicks" in and out of overdrive at 40-55 mph. Above 55mph, truck stays fine. Problem comes and goes. Somtimes a day goes by and truck is fine, sometimes not. Took truck back to the same shop, Fault code generated said to replace the TPS ($800. 00 total cost) I would like to find a cheaper way. I am looking at the truck in the AM to make sure everything is grounded, clean, etc.

Took a trip to Portland, Oregon, I live in Bend, and truck ran fine over and back, sometimes would kick out but all in all, a good trip.

ANY ideas would be great. Email at home is -- email address removed -- or phone is 541-610-9332.

Thanks!

What code number is it ?
After that you need to do a test on the TPS to confirm its the part , some times it can be a connection .

I come with DTC detected in companion JTec mod .
I am not doing regular repair now days , so I do not remember all that is part of this .
$800 again some missing info , that seems way to much for just a TPS , but there are no codes that say just replace anything , codes tell you where to start looking , if a part is suspected it need to be tested to confirm .
There have been some trucks that wear through a harness near the alt , and on mostly older trucks , rapping the small alt wires with aluminum foil , to keep airent electrical signals from causing issues , but a sweep test of the TPS would be the 1st thing .

I have pretty much the same issue. Dealer is going to warranty it so I guess I will let them. Had to order part so I'll hurry up and wait. I'll post the end result.

If you do not have a scope you can not find all glitches in many senors .
Find a shop that has one & knows how to use it .
I am not trying to say anything about your abilities , just that this is how things are made these days , more complicated than most do it yourselfers are tooled up for , or know how .

yeah, my dads 99 work truck did the same thing, i think the filter your talking about is from DTT, noise filter, its about $60, however, on my dads I just cleaned all the terminals and did the aluminum foil on the alternator wire, seems to run fine for him now

TSP fix

Hi- Thanks for the threads. I have access to an O scope, and being an A & P mechanic, I know how to use one, no offense taken, all ideas are greatly thanked!! I understand cleaning the terminals on the batteries and all electrical connections. Why do I have to wrap the alternator wire in foil since I haven't had any problem in 10 years and 130,000 miles with the TPS? I added the Gale Banks Stage 3 system, was not comfortable with the "schotchlock" connections and am wondering if this is part of the problem. I only have time to work on the truck on the weekend as my job keeps me busy. Most of the time the truck works fine, and it does seem to be worse on a bumpy road vs a smooth road. Thanks!

+1..... P1693 is just a companion code. I had the same thing and took my truck to Auto Zone... they retrieved code P0121... . APPS. I followed the APPS adjustment thread and have had no problems since.

Electrical connections can develop issues over time & conditions , as an example you scotch locks , did you use dielectric grease ?
Use the scope to do a sweep test , should be no glitches , a scope checks the circuit many times faster than a multi meter , that way the multi meter will not catch all problems , like the scope , especially on movement sensors .
The filter may work , but I've always been a fan of finding the problem & eliminating it , instead of covering it up .
I read some posts on cleaning TPS , but they seem to be on older trucks .

I think somebody makes a electronic noise filter to stop the TC from doing that.

Check out the DTT website. They sell a noise filter and it stopped the exact problem on my truck (unfortunately after dropping about 400 on a shift solenoid and install#@$%!)! The noise filter cost about $45 ( 2 years ago) and also made my high idle/3 cylinder work after it had been installed twice! (I have a theory on that one, as if u are curious). It tool me a grand total of 2 minutes to install and has worked flawlessly.

Also check your battery terminals are tight/corrosion free too,

Hope this helps,

I just got back from the dealer. Listen to this one... When I went there earlier in the week they said it was a warranty repair. I just had to remove my Edge Juice. So I did. Brought the truck back in and while they were replacing the part the lady at the service desk came up to me and said she just found out that is used to be warranty but isn't anymore. The tech was about half done with the work she said. What do I want to do? Well, I need the truck so I said just do it. So, I take it in the ### and the $$$ for about $650 out the door. I look at my invoice and notice there is a charge of $29 and some change for misc shop charges. Turn around go back inside and ask what is with the misc charges? Guy says all invoices at all shops have that for misc items like brake cleaner, rags... . I said $29 bucks of brake cleaner and rags to replace one sensor? He said, yeah, thats kinda high, they base it on a percent of total job cost. At least they refunded that fee.

Then you haven't been to a shop in 10 + yrs.
There are several terms used , shop supplies ect. , its for the ever increasing cost of doing bis , such as environmental fees , waste disposal , shop supplies that many customers share like a can of brake cleaner on & on .
This is normal practice for at least a decade .
Your complaining about the wrong thing , $29 dollars instead of the $650 that was a warranty , if they start the job on a warranty by law it has to end on a warranty , but I would guess we are not hearing the hole story .

Um, no offense, but did you even read my post at all? $29 in shop supplies to replace a TPS? Like you even said, customers can share a can of brake cleaner... what are we sharing, a $500, 16 oz can of it? What supplies are we talking about to change a TPS? I guess I had to pay for all the tools too? Are they disposable as well? Waste disposal and environmental fees to replace a TPS? Maybe 1 cent to throw it in the trash! I know the cost of business goes up, thats why the cost of parts and the cost of labor goes up. The misc fees are just a way to rob us of more money. I assume you work for a dealer? And what part of the story do you feel you are missing? I didn't even complain about having to pay for the repair myself after being told it was under warranty. What could I possibly have to hide here?

You screwed your self , and want to put blame els where , I just tried to give a little more explanation and that it wasn't one bad shop or they were picking on you .
3-5% of the total bill is what almost any shop any where adds .
You screwed your self by paying for what they called a warranty in the beginning .
If you do not pay for warranty work then they can not charge 3-6% of nothing .
How is this on me ?

I'm not saying it's on you. People make mistakes and I have had positive experiences with this dealer so far so I decided to pay for the repair. I would appreciate it if the next time I make an honest mistake I get a break from that person as well. I did think that the extra $29 was over the top though. Sorry to the original poster of this thread, I was just trying to share my TPS repair experience.

Just curious, but what reason/explaination did they give about the warranty? Did they say that the Edge voided it (is the TPS a STAR controlled part?) or was it a mileage/expiration situation (which seems as if it would have been pretty obvious ie; 3year/36k, 7year/70K 5year/100k etc or what ever term of ext warranty u bought)?

Just curious how they made a mistake about warranty service when they would have looked at your odometer and had to punch everything into the computer to prior to givin a price quote etc. I know at the dealer I occasionally use, they print out an estimate sheet/work order with all the info on it and I have to review and sign to accept prior to any work is even started. Warranty stuff says right on there that it is covered under the warranty under the "price" area.

Again, just curious, not trying to start a fight. I too think that $29 for shop incidentials is high for a job like a TPS, but like you said it looks like a flat % rate that charge for that.
