Hey everybody, I have a question that I hope someone can shed some light on for me. My 93 peiodically jumps out of overdrive at highway speeds. The times that it occurs is variable. By that I mean at cool operating temps, and at normal operating temps. If I back off the throttle and then accelerate again, overdrive comes back and stays. From what I have read on some of the forums, I suspect the TPS. Any ideas??? And I don't know about anybody else but I don't have a money tree growing in my back yard so I have a hard time dishing out $600. 00 for a TPS from Dodge. Can anybody tell me where I can get one and how much to expect to pay?
Thanx Tony B.

Tony,

Don't waste your money at Chrystler on the TPS. The Cummins part number is 3621094. E-mail me if you want the information on how to check the voltage of the TPS. I paid $138 for the TPS and shipping. Hope this helps.

Thanks Jeremy, it does help. Since I posted the message, I have checked with a local parts supplier and discovered that they are the same from 1990 to 1994 (Echlin part #2-29323) and costs $205. 00 (CDN). A far cry from the dealer price. Cummins wants $245. 00 (CDN) for the sensor..... not sure what I'am going to do. I would appreciate the instructions for checking the voltage though. Thanks in advance.
Tony

I've had mine replaced three times in the last 50,000 miles. They cost me $195 from the dealer. I don't know why they charge you $600. I think I'll try and go direct to cummins also.

Tony B IM new here and should be asking instead of commenting. My 93 Did the same thing, I had the throttle sensor replaced at a dodge dealer for $195 plus labor. Since then I have heard that the connector is really the problem and sometimes disconnecting and cleaning will fix it. If not replace the connector. Has anyone else heard this. I have doubts, but it might be worth a try. Also am aware that guys are carrying replacement sensors with them. Would like to ask what else is envolved in replaceing sensor beyond removing the two allen head screws and exchanging sensors,

Welcome Bob! Good to have another 1st Gen man aboard. The TPS is very easy to change. It took me longer to find the darn allen wrenches than it did to change it. Once it is installed check to see if you like the way the truck shifts from 3rd to 4th. There is an adjustment screw to change when the shift occurs. You can do a search to find out the exact method. I didn't have to adjust mine. Mine lasted for 160,000 miles, so I figure myself pretty lucky. I haven't heard much about the connections going bad, but anything is possible. Some of the more experienced members can help you there. Just hang around here and you will get all of the answers to your questions.

There is a service bulliten about the TPS connector terminals becoming spread. Can't pull the number off the top of my head right now. Will try to remember to look it up tomorrow, but after working 12 hours today I'm not going to guaruntee anything. I believe the terminal on the TPS are . 045", if you have a carb guage or drill bit this size it should slide it should slide in and out of the terminal an connector with resistance. If it kind of falls in or wiggles around the connecter needs to be replaced.
Hope this helps.

OK, I have a stupid question, one that a few folks at the last Roundup didn't know the answer to. Do the manual transmission first gens have a TPS? On trucks that have it, where is it located? Also, what sort of electronics are in the big black box hidden in the left front fender? Thanks in advance for your reply!

MY 91 doesnt have a TPS. My 92 auto does and the top of the pump is different than the 91. I have also changed the TPS on the 92 and had to adjust it several times. The speed sensor also has an interlock with the TPS also the engine temp has an interlock with it. My best advice is check to make sure you have good grounds at these items as the TPS works on 0-5 volts and is sensitive to poor grounds that make erratic voltages.

Hi Scott,

The answer to your question is No, the stick transmission's do not have a TPS, they don't use/need one. The TPS is to help control the shifting on the auto trans. It works in conjunction with speed sensor, throttle position, and other input. As far as I understand it, it controls the 3-4-3 shift.

Jump in guys, if I missed anything or am off base here.

Thanks, BushWakr. I'm glad I don't have something that seems to be so trouble-prone... the less electronics, the more I like it!
