I have a friend who has a stock (no mods) 98. 5 drw 3500 that the dealer told them that they would have to replace the TPS every 40,000 miles. Is there any history of this that you guys know? Sounds kind of flaky to me but this truck has 200,000 miles on it now and they are looking at their 5th sensor.

Symptoms are shifting back and forth between gears (not any two in particular) and sometimes goes to idle while travelling down the road at speed and then resume.

Any clues????

12 or 24 valve? If it's a 24 valve, find a new dealer.

The TPS on a electronic 24 valve truck is called an 'APPS'.

Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor. The TPS only fits on 12 valve, P pumped rigs.

Well now aint that interesting. I can't wait until the 'tech' plugs in and tells them that it is a TPS that is out again.

Do a search on the 'Throttle Position Sensor', or TPS

And then do a search for the 'APPS'... .

There are pictures of each. They are completly different. Your friends problem HINTS at a fault in the PCM, which controls the automatic transmission. Power Control Module, located on the passenger side firewall.

Ok perhaps it is a terminology issues with my friend. Has there been any of this kiind of problem noted with the second gen trucks?

Look at it this way: if it was a common problem you would have had a whole lot more replies by now.

With that being said, the APPS in a 24v does wear fairly quickly. I replaced mine at about 85,000 miles because it developed a flat spot and became "noisy" at 1700-1900 rpm. Not bad, just annoying.
