Before I concluded that I had a defective PCM (minute cracks in the circuitry causing intermittent problems with the TPS and the O/D switch), I decided to run a voltage test on my TPS. Since Murphy (of Murphy’s Law) lives in a spare room at my home, disaster was quick to arrive. The paper clip attached to the center pin on the TPS connector came into contact with the block (a simple warning in the manual may have helped prevent this), and the voltage dropped to zero—short circuit.
I first thought I blew the whole PCM and doubted the truck would even start. It started normally to my surprise. Then I thought it would not run through the gears and I would have to limp to the dealer.
First shift normal, second normal. EVERYTHING NORMAL! OK, time for a WOT test with my new TST shift kit installed. Watch the tach in case something is blown and the rev-limiter is not functioning. BEAUTIUL! Perfect shifts at @ approx 2600, no clutch slippage, and she screams.
Maybe the overload blew the volt meter? Nope, checks out OK using a AA battery.
So what gives? Everything seems to work perfectly and the TPS is out of the picture (or certainly appears to be).
After reviewing the latest issue of TDR, I wonder if I am sitting on a time bomb, but it has been 5,000 miles and all is working fine.
Any advice?
