Lately Ive been having problems after coasting down a hill. My foot is still on the throttle but not enough to gain speed. When I reach the bottom and push down the engine won't respond. I let up and try again then it kicks in. I did a search and the APPS or TPS posts seem to be having somewhat of the same problems. This has gone on for about a month and seems to be happening more frequently. I looked at the guages last time it happened and they read normal. No check engine light either. Thanks in advance for any help.

My truck started doing this exact thing just this past week. It smokes bad while doing it. In fact was going through Eisenhower tunnel on i70 at 10000 feet and it started doing and it backfired in the tunnel shot about 2 feet of flame out the tailpipe. Scared the heck out of myself, the wife and probably everyone else that was in the tunnel sounded like a darn cannon in there. It had done it previous to that experience on the trip and afterward as well. Can't replicate it at will though. Runs fine except when it does that. Only time it does it is like when you described, low throttle, low boost condition, and down hill, gauges all good including fp, go to hit the go pedal and nada. Only way I could get it to clear up was to mash the pedal to the floor and get it to kickdown a gear, a few times letting off completely as you mentioned worked but all the time. I also was thinking the tps/apps. However with all the grey/white/blue smoke it belches it must be getting fuel to produce that much smoke. Had to go get an emissions test for new tags at local place that I have a relationship with and they threw a scanner on it for me and checked for codes. Cant remember the code number but it was injection pump timing failure. Unfortunately the guy accidently cleared the code so as soon as it does it again and sets a code, off to the dealer I go. I hope it is not the injection pump but if so warranty should cover it.

If you get a definitve answer please post would love to find out.

Swung by the dealer today to see if they could take a look see. They couldn't fit in today but will tommorrow. I gave him a list of codes set from the odometer readout, 0500 speed sensor failure, 0382 glow plug/heater 2 malfunction, 1693 or 92 companion code set and the real important one 0216 If I remember the number right, injector pump timing failure. After describing the symptoms and codes he said it sure sounded like the injection pump going south. They will check it tomorrow when I take it back. He said all that blue smoke was a sure sign of the injector pump wigging out. We shall see what they have to say after they do whatever it is they do to check it tommorrow.

Barry, keep me updated. I have a 1693 and a 0216 code too. Just check it a few minutes ago. Guess Ill have to make a call to the dealer tomorrow.

I had the 1693 and 0216 codes and some odd stuff going on in the upper rpm range. Took it in and the pump was toast. Took it in Monday and had it back on Tuesday night. Replaced under warranty.

DPugh:

Took it in and service writer said it was the pump, mechanic says it is pump and codes point to pump but DC would not authorize the warranty work unless it did it again since they could not duplicate it. Well an hour after I left the the shop it did it again and reset the codes. Was out of town, worse this trip than last one. So will call service writer this am to get squared away or to start some serious ******* and moaning to someone higher on the food chain. In fact I was trying to keep the rpm's up to see if that would help coming down the passes last night and got pulled over by the highway patrol. After I told him why no I didn't realize I was speeding (84 in a 65) I was just trying to keep the rpm up for these reasons he said well that explains it because I was going to warn you about all the smoke and that it was a hazard to vehicles behind you. I guess he felt sorry for me or was just one heck of a nice guy didn't give me a ticket. Just said watch the speed and get it fixed. Will let you know what I find out today.

Thanks Barry.

Heres what I found out. I reset my APPS last night and unhooked the computer to clear the codes. Figured it was worth a try. It only cleared the 1693 for some reason. After recalibration I started it up and took it for a drive. All seems normal. Power has never really been down. Truck is real strong except in times of hesitation. Which makes me question the injection pump. As for the 0216 code, my lift pump did go south, and I put a pump down by the tank. Also having low fuel pressure may have damaged the VP? I didnt have a FP guage but the truck started to miss and jerk, so I figured it was the LP. After I put a new one on all was good till now. I also read that a 0216 code could be from low fuel pressure. It may have been there all this time. I plan to take it to the dealer and clear both codes and see what happens.

I have a pump in case your dealer wont warrantee yours

the wire has been tapped and it has 20,000 miles on it

I am in the club of people who have replaced a pump and not curing the shakes

I've been throwing the 0216 code (Fuel injection pump timing failure) for two months, and 5K. I've trouble shot the hell out of this truck... swapped comp, re-set APPS, replaced cam position sensor, replaced fuel system relay, scanned and cleared codes over 20 times  ... . it still comes back, and my driveability symptoms occur more frequenty and for longer duration. I'll be in Piers' shop in a couple of weeks for a new VP44 even if I have to tow it.
