Remember when it was more common to see this even on 4x4's??? I know if you really need the traction the traction tires on the front are better but for 90+% what's wrong with good traction tires on the rear and a good steering tire on the front???
Actually there is nothing wrong with this practice. However with 4x4, most people like to rotate from front to back. On my 4x4 I run real mild all season's with highway tread in mind for my next set. Since I have the extra traction of the 4x4, i don't have a need for aggressive tires. Now if i was still in the logwoods, then yes, i would prefer a more aggressive all season or mud tread.
The tread really wouldn't matter. However, if the tires are not EXACTLY the same size, they will bind and cause problems when you engage the 4w/d! That is why most people run 4 matching tires and rotate them to keep the wear (and diameter) as even a possible.
On my 2wd I run an Aggresive tires on the rear and a street (nearly sand tread) on the front.
On my Dad's DRW 4wd, I run street tires on the rear, and aggresive tires on the front. We tow heavy often and my idea is that the strteet tires will alst a long time on the rear putting down all the power, and when we do get close to stuck, put it in 4wd, and let the fronts do alot of work...
