Anyne tried to trade their 2nd gen in lately? My has 96,700 miles, a few dings and rust starting on the doors and I was offered 6500 and 7000 when the NADA average is 9400

I think the average description form their website describes my truck:

Average Trade-In

Mechanically sound but may require some repairs/servicing to pass all necessary inspections; Paint, body and wheel surfaces have moderate imperfections and an average finish and shine which can be improved with restorative repair; Interior reflects some soiling and wear in relation to vehicle age, with all equipment operable or requiring minimal effort to make operable; Clean title history; Vehicle will need a fair degree of reconditioning to be made ready for resale

Even Rough is 8300

Rough Trade-In

Significant mechanical defects requiring repairs in order to restore reasonable running condition; Paint, body and wheel surfaces have considerable damage to their finish, which may include dull or faded (oxidized) paint, small to medium size dents, frame damage, rust, or obvious signs of previous repairs; Interior reflects above average wear, with inoperable equipment, damaged or missing trim, and heavily soiled /permanent imperfections on the headliner, carpet, and upholstery; May have a branded title and un-true mileage; Vehicle will need substantial reconditioning and repair to be made ready for resale; Some existing issues may be difficult to restore.

Blue Book isn't generally the guide dealers will use. They'll use NADA Black Book values. Blue Book is a monthly to bi-monthly poll of what cars have been selling for across the nation. Black Book is a weekly update of averages cars are bringing at wholesale auctions. Dealers offer trade in based on Black Book because it is much more up to date and tells them what they can fall back on if the car can't be sold for retail. $0. 02

put it up on craigslist.org dealers have to make a profit on it and leave a good margin for themselves. I would too with the economy like it is. Before you give it away for 7k check your other options.

What are you planning on getting instead of your 2001?

I'd was looking at a 2004 Ford F-350 Crew Cab w/ a V-10 w/19000 miles. As I don't think we are going to see diesel drop to the same price or less than gas anytime in the near future plus I need a bigger back seat. . But I'm not giving my truck away for $6500! My wife & son will have to adjust. The dog can ride in the front seat w/ me!

Just a heads up, co-worker owns a v-10 and his average is 9mpg real world. When he tow's he is around 7mpg.

I figured mine out to see if I would save by going gas, and all I have to do to break even is average 4 mpg more than a gasser. Plus my real world re-sale value is world's better than a v-10. Ask anyone who has owned one whether they will buy another?

My 96 dually 4x4 5 spd with 4:10's will get 16-17mpg real world numbers, (that's winter blend).

Towing my 20' trailer, 7000# skid and all it's attachments, (gross combined weight of 21K) will average me about 12-13mpg.

Just food for thought.

My buddy w/ short bed V10 crew cab gets 9mpg driving 65-70 pulling his large 5th wheel, which is what I get hauling my truck camper & towing my boat. My 92 D250 got GREAT mileage, this one doesn't.

Trade ins are no longer sold by the dealer that brings them in. They are taken to an auction to be sold for profit to another dealer that will then sell it for a profit again. So the offer they make you has at least that much profit taken off the actual value. It is a screwed up system. I know. My Mother has a 2000 Cadillac Deville. She bought it with 6000 miles on it. It now has 70000 on it. And needs a motor due to a problem documented under the original warranty. The three extra warranties that she got through Cadillac will not cover it because it is a preexisting problem. The original won't cover it because it is out of warranty. Nice little system they have isn't it? So they offered her 3000 for trade in because it needs a motor (4500 if it was sound). An eight year old car with two extended warranties driven by a grandmother it's entire life AND IT NEEDS A MOTOR???? gm is crap. There is a figure of around 700 dealerships that will close this year. And they wonder why. You just can't screw everybody, all the time, both coming and going. Dealerships suck.

Some people are just not very honest about their fuel mileage.

The best way to get great fuel mileage is to lie about it.

I'm sure you've heard it before but I have to say it, this friend of mine is the "salt of the earth". He wouldn't lie to anyone let alone a friend about about anything. Dan's info is very reliable. I wish that we lived closer to each other so that my son could have been in his 5th grade class last year. He's very particular about his boat, truck, camper. He recently traded his Ford Explorer for a Chevy Trailblazer, and has been very frank in his dislikes of the Trailblazer.

I won't doubt your friend's honesty, but he must be one in a million. A Ford V10 is just not known for good fuel mileage. In the long run you might be better off keeping your 2nd gen Cummins, especially since the trade in is so low. In addition, you are always better off selling your truck on your own then trading it in.

Keep the truck. Look at the truck payments you wont have and increased cost of insurance. I sit and think about this too sometimes but they dont make trucks like yours and mine anymore. The body style is a classic... ...

I agree with Jeepit 100%. Keep the Dodge/Cummins.
