Ordering a new truck

What shocks to replace OE?

Hi everyone. After eight Chevy’s I’m a new Dodge owner.

I was driving my ’01 Duramax 2500HD two weeks ago when I notice I had virtually no oil pressure. Turns out the seal between an injector unit and the injector return line had failed and filled the crankcase with diesel. The truck had 103,000 miles on it and up till then it had performed very well—quick, quiet, smooth, and consistently over 19 mpg with a 1300# vet unit in the back. The dealer fixed it for free in spite of it being 3,000 miles past the engine warrantee. Although the Chevy had given good service up till then I didn’t trust an engine that had run down the interstate with basically diesel fuel for lubricant. Last week I traded it on a Cummins HO, and I’ve put 1400 miles on so far (average 60,000/year)

First impressions:

-Noise level about the same as the Duramax, but sounds different—a deep growl—real nice

-Acceleration very similar. Allison was a bit smoother shifting than the 48re but they both are real peppy.

-34 gal. fuel tank vs. 26 gal. on the Chevy—big improvement

-Large filler neck is great. On the Chevy I could only fill at the car diesel pumps

-Four inch exhaust vs. 3. 5” on the Chevy

-Chevy ride was slightly smoother, but the Dodge ride is quite acceptable.

-Dodge sits higher which is nice. Better average ground clearance. I'm skinny and I could barely crawl under the Chevy.

-I’m not big on looks but the Dodge wins hands down

-First two tanks on the Dodge: 17. 5, 18. 4 mpg. This is almost identical to my beginning mileage on the Chevy. Should improve with time. I carry a 1300# bed load and most of my driving is backcountry roads (I am a light footed driver. Even my wife tells me to "step on it" and she's a cop!).

So far I’m VERY happy with my Dodge. No regrets at all. I hope to pick up a lot of useful information on this site. Thanks, Jeff

Welcome to the group Jeff! I think you'll find all the info you need right here. I take it you're a vet? Where are you in western North Carolina? Nice country around there.

Look forward to communicating.

Welcome to TDR!

I traded my 02 Chevy for my 03 Dodge, this truck is turning out to be the best I've owned.

I think you will like this site.

Enjoy

I see that light bulb came on in you fellows head finally:D You got the right site to find out everything you want to know about the

Cummings/Dodge. You have crossed over to the other side:D

put a 2" level kit on the front and 315's and watch everybody go :--) the chevy guys will look at you like this  because you make their truck lool like low rider. :-laf

Welcome to the dark side! Soon you'll find it hard to leave perfection alone will begin to hangout on any and all vendors web sites who sell aftermarket goodies. Your going to find that the Cummins gets better as the miles add up. Power and throttle response change drastically untill you get to about 8 - 10K miles.

Engine problems are non-existent and I've never heard of anyone wearing one out, some on this site have even hit 1 million miles.

Enjoy the ride

I'm running one of each at work, Chevy, Ford and Dodge. The feedback I get along with my own impressions are that the Dodge is the king of the hill for a work truck. FINALLY an automatic transmission that spends more time trying to get into overdrive than trying to jump out. The Dodge is the best "truck", the Chevy is the best "carlike truck" and the Ford has been very good to me, a close rival to the Dodge. I wasn't ready to be a guinea pig for Fords new 6. 0 though. I am very happy with the new Dodge and will likely replace the '01 Duramax with one by next spring. Enjoy the new truck:)

I know of one other Duramax owner that was displeased. He had head gasket problems at 9,000 miles (leaking coolant) and the injector seal problem (crankcase full of diesel also) at 23,000 miles or so. He had a really nice '00 F-250 Super Duty PSD that he traded in. The last repair job GM elected to put him in a brand new short block. He's not that happy, but at least he's happy with the decision GM made towards repairing his truck. Now he's buried in his truck and having it repaired too frequently. Needless to say, he misses his F-250 alot.
