So my wife and I just got back from the dealership. We drove our 2012 FX4 ecoboost , with 138,000 KMs down to see what we could get for it. The ford is a daily driver, with long hiway trips thrown in for good measure. Four times a year we hook up a 6000LB travel trailer, and load the 6.5ft box with 800-1000 lbs of gear. Towing is great with the ford ,it has the 132L fuel tank and our range is around 500KM's. The only drawback is the milage , but the power is excellent!
A couple months ago, A friend at work just got a 2015 Outdoorsman Eco-diesel, and asked if he could borrow my 18t equipment trailer. He was going to drive a day away to pick up a 70 Chevelle and bring it back home. After we calculated the towing weight of 2750 for the trailer and 3200 for the small block Chevelle, We thought this would be a good test for the little diesel...( we both have 12 valves:-
)
Upon his return , he said the little diesel worked well , no land speed records but did the speed limit on the hills. And remarkably the fuel milage was around 20MPG, LOADED.......We live in BC, so this really impressed me. Our Ford has the jam to pull all the steep hills in the land with ease, but you pay for it at the pump.
So back to our trip today...we pulled into the dealership and I spotted a 2016 Eco-diesel outdoorsman in the colour we liked and optioned close to what our ford was. They gave us the keys and off we went , just me an the missus. This will be my wifes rig, as im all sorted with a few to choose from,so she takes us for a good long cruze ,up steep hills and i fiddle with the cabin stuff. She likes it, and dosen't notice the turbo lag, and really likes the big Video screen,console etc. We switch seats and i get a chance to have my way with it . We're out in the country and all alone so I load up the convertor and do a good hard launch. She breaks loose and the VDC kicks in ,so i turn it off and do another launch , both tires light up throu 3 gears and we're up to 70mph! I was surprized a bit but the Ford can do this too,LOL .The 8 speed is so smooth seamless gear changes. The truck feels more planted than the ford, a bit firmer but confidence inspiring . we have lots of good twisty roads and elevations to play on so i push it a bit , and the Dodge liked it ! as sure footed as a RAM! I can't wait to hook a trailer to it ! Our ford always felt a bit soft and wollowy. Fast and tourquey but not very confidence inspiring . Needless to say ,we both liked it. it should make an excellent daily driver for her.
To conclude , the cost for both trucks are almost the same, Our ford F-150 FX4 in 2012 was a factory order ,stickered at 55000 CAN, and this 2016 SLT Eco-diesel was 56000CAN , also a factory order.. Of course there's rebates , company discounts, 0% ,financing. making it a very managable 5 year car loan. oh yeah, gave us 19000CAN for the ford with 138000KMS. That paid off the balance of our loan plus a few thou
