Adding air brakes?

There has been a lot posted about this subject and a lot of answers given. But my problem and question is, light braking on the trailer with every thing adjusted and new backing plates last year, ( the same as now), and some suggesting heaver wires out side the axle housing, at least a 12 gauge, question, doesn't the magnet wire being much smaller choke the power down because of the 16, or smaller wire feed that goes to the magnet? I see where some have re-wired from the hitch to each brake with the heavy wiring. Has this helped? I have had poor trailer braking since it was new from the lot. I have a P2 up graded to the p3 configuration from Techonsia.
So the question is to increase the braking on the trailer. I had to wire in the controller, no plug in this vintage truck. trailer hitch factory.
Some have just re-wired outside the axle tube, brake to brake. how Effective has this been?
Thanks for your time guys I appreciate your answers.

Mine is a 95 CC 3/4 4x4 with a 07 5thwheel

Replacing the wiring with heavier wire may help, 12 volt power drops off fast with long runs of wire. Make sure your brakes are adjusted up tight, tighten till you can't turn the wheel then back off until it turns free. The bad news is you probably won't be able to really have good braking with what came with the trailer. Probably 12" X 2" setup. How much does your trailer weight? bg

On the adjusting I have read adjust till you can't rotate the tire and then back off "5"notches. This last time, and its hard to tell, with the drag on the shoes and magnet, adjusted with a little drag. So seems like the notches idea is a little better way to find the equalization on all four wheels. Trailer around 12K. So its not light.

I rewired my travel trailer with two different gauge wires. 10 ga jacketed wire was used from the umbilical cord to a junction box near the axles. 12 ga. jacketed wire from each wheel to the junction box. It should be grounded all the way back to the umbilical to the truck
Also check the output of the brake controller. I once had a P2 that was worthless.

Is the stock blue wire a 12 or 14? its a 14 or so in the axle and smaller yet to the Magnet.
