Trailer brake wiring,help?

Hello,where do i splice in the wires (into the truck harness) to the four wires of my brake controller. Obviously the ground and hot lead are a given but where do the red and blue wires go. The red has "brakeswitch" and the blue has "brake" printed on it,i figured someone has done this once or twice. I tried looking at a few pages in this forum and saw Klengers but it didnt help. Thank you

Blue wire goes to the brakes on the trailer, the red taps into the wire from the brake light switch that feeds the brake lights. Make sure you connect the red to the wire that is only hot when the brake pedal is pushed.



Not sure on the newer trucks, but there may be a harness under the dash that is for trail brake controllers. If there is you can buy an adapter to hook your controller up with no splicing. Look in you owners manual it should state if there is one on your truck.

Look in the PDC under the hood and see if it has a "trailer relay". If it does then your truck came from the factory wired for traliler brakes/lights. Look under the dash under and probably slightly left of the steering col. shaft, you will see a bundle of wires and the plug for the brake controller (four wires) is usually tied to or stuffed behind some of these wires. If you find the plug then you will have to go to a RV Dealer, someone who installs hitches or the dealer and buy the pigtail to plug into the plug under the dash. Some of the pigtails ar colorcoded to match the controller wire colors, some of the older ones are not. Sounds like you have the wire functions figured out. bg

Yes B G,i do have the factory installed trailer harness,thanks for the heads-up next to the steering column,i'll check it out tomorrow,thank you.
