I went to adjust my brakes on my 1996 TravelEZE 35ft 5th wheel with Dexter axles.
The reason I wanted to adjust my brakes was they were not working so well on my last trip.
Each time before leaving on a trip I test the trailer brakes by moving about 5 MPH, then I use only the electric brakes and normally they stop me just fine. But not this last time! The truck just kept on rolling along. I could feel some brakes being applied but not enough to stop 22K pounds.
What I found was most scary!
The first thing I did was jacked up one wheel to do the adjustment.
When I stuck the Spoon in to adjust the brakes, the adjuster was gone.
I took the wheel off, then the hub and all the adjuster parts were just laying in the bottom of the hub and fell out.
The return springs had broken (on all 4 wheels) and allowed the adjusters to fall off of all 4 wheels.
You can imagine the damage to all those loss parts and the shoes and other internal parts as the wheel just went on rolling as we went down the road.
Please, Please check your brakes, and service them or have them serviced reguarly.
