Trailer connector cleaning

Quick answers needed on towing a gooseneck.

Went to use our travel trailer this weekend and found a bad connection in the connector for the trailer brakes . Any other ways to clean the connections other than scrapping and brushing?

Aerosol electronic cleaner works for me. If you are seeing green or white corrosion baking soda and water mix will get it, you can also buy this mix in an aerosol can.
 
BobV - I tow a 5th wheel and on my connector I use a dielectric grease made by permatex. I first clean all the terminals, then take a small water color brush and coat all the contacts with the dielectric grease. I also did away with all the clamp type connectors on the wiring running from axle to axle under the 5th wheel for the trailer breaks. I found some that wasn't making good contact. I removed the clamp connectors and soldered (sp) all the connections. Also on all the running lights, I removed the lens and coated the base of the bulbs and contact with white greast. I know this sounds messy, but I used this method on my motorcycle for years and never had a problem. I think if you will try some of the above, I think you will be satisfied.

I do the same thing with "NO-OX" on my power cord to the truck, and to all the 12 volt trailer lights. It seems like the trailer manufacturers ALL use the cheapest JUNK available for clearance and stop lights! I used a Dremel motor tool with a stainless steel brush to clean all the recepticles and bases of the bulbs, then smeared a light coating of NO-OX on the bases and smeared it inside the recepticles with Q-tips. That was over 2 years ago, and all the lights STILL burn, and at full brilliance!

Another neat trick for more effective lights, is to carefully apply aluminum foil as a reflecting surface behind the tailight/turn signal bulbs - use the shiney side of course, and be CAREFUL that you don't create a potential short circuit if bare wires are showing. The same works for those outside night lights the many trailers have - really increases effectiveness of the lights!

I may be messing up but I occassionally spray a tad of wd-40 on my plugs. I do let them drip dry before plugging in.
