Trailer frame coatings

Ok, so I have my trailer frame all welded up. Axels are on and most of my grinding is done. I'm looking for a real durable, yet reasonable, rust inhibiting paint or coating to put on it. Anyone have a suggestion. Function is the key here. It does not need to be pretty, but DURABLE. I want to be able to paint over the existing paint too. I've used the Hammerite before, but was curious if anyone knew of something better; perhaps a farm equipment coating.

Hey Henry, Glad to see your movin' right along on the construction. I used the sprayable undercoating (spray gun type) on mine and it has fared well so far.

Henry, You might want to check out Durabak DIY bedliner kit. It comes in a variety of colors. Their web address is www.nonslipcoating.com . See what you think. According to their site it's $79. 00 a gallon, plus shipping. -Glen

I would consider having the frame sprayed with Line-X or a Rhino coating. Can't get more durable than that.

Once again I would have to recommend POR-15. Then paint it with whatever you want or not at all.

AS a ham radio operator, I have a 70 foot tower made of 4 galvanized sections that crank up and down. Normal wear-and-tear cause the galvanizing to be scraped off, exposing the bare metal underneath to moisture and rust damage. I use a product called "cold galvanizing" that comes in an ordinary spray "rattle-can" to patch tose spots, the stuff works GREAT, and would make an excellent first coat under whatever you select to put over it - some of the stuff suggested above works quite well - but some of them CAN trap moisture between themselves and the underlaying metal - promoting hiddent rust damage...

While POR15 is a great finish, it does have its limitations. POR15 is not UV resistant and will go dull and almost chaulky with little sun exposure... . great under the hood though!

Good info Mike as this is the first time I've ever heard this. I guess that would be another reason to paint it. It works great on frames, though.
