I'm pulling a 10k enclosed car carrier. The dealer that sold me the trailer said that I didn't need any lube for the ball as the paint inside the coupler on the trailer would do the job. It did for the first two pulls. Now the hitch groans when ever the truck moves relative to the trailer and there is some galling on the ball. What lube do you folks use for this application? I'm thinking of using some plain old extreme pressure moly-graph multi purpose grease; but only because I have some. Any one know what is recommended here?

Thanks in advance,

PK

I'm with Larry. A coupla strokes from the same gun I use on the tie rod ends. Or a good fingerful of the tub grease. Whatever's handy for heavy grease.

NO need to get carried away with it. Only draws road grit. Obviously counterproductive. Wipe/spray it down periodically and daub on some new.

freakin brilliant! I ne'er thought of it that way. Hmmm, paint for lube, and how often do you repaint the inside of the coupler?

Another dealer earns his reputation. Or maybe he meant that the paint would get it home from the lot, empty, short time.

I've got some Lucas 5th wheel lube that I use. It's slicker and thinner than grease, but just as messy. Or grease, or whatever is handy when I get the dry ball syndrome. :-laf

I can't come anywhere near my hitch with clean clothes. I use anything available, vaseline, lubri plate, wheel bearing grease, whatever. It still moans and groans and looks dry when when I get where I'm going!

I use "HITCH-BALL LUBRICANT", it is a Sil-Glyde product. I believe I picked it up at the local NAPA. Cat. No. HB-2,

and is mfg. by the AGS Company, Muskegon MI. The tube

is 1. 25oz, and the product works very well.

I've been using Mystic JT-6 Red (High-Temp) grease. I've noticed that after long, cross country hauls, the grease has dried up and turned black. This is supposed to be a better than average grease.

While at Thunder @ Muncie, last year, I bought a jar of Reese Towpower Hitch Ball Lube. On the jar it says, White Grease, Odorless, Non-toxic, Will Not Break Down, Reduces Friction, Superior Lubricant. Part # 58117.

It works. Stays greasy, much longer.

I think it was about $5. 00/ 4 oz.

lube

Before switching to the 5'er, we used to take a sheet of wax paper about a foot square and fold it to 4 thicknesses of 6x6 and lay it atop the ball as we dropped the trailer on. It cleanly lubed it. No more pants with that grease line at mid-calf... and quiet too.
