Trailer tires

Is there a "tire of choice" for trailers? I see the ones that are on the 22' TT are marked "trailer use only". O. K. that tells me don't put them on cars or trucks, but is there something I should look for in a set of trailer tires?

I am currently running Cooper trailer tires on my 31' 5th wheel after being a guinie pig for goodyear on Marathons and then Wrangler HT's, so far look good.

B. G. I like Coopers, but for whatever reason I can only find them in those "hole in the wall shops". The problem is they do not offer road hazard and all those other warrenty and such. Do you get them at a chain store?

So far I have had good luck with teh Good year 10 ply in the 215-85-R16. I have the ones with the S on the sidewall. I haven't documente the mileage but I would guess I have close to 9,000 miles on the trailer and I would guess they are about a /third wore out. I know they get a lot of wiggling and turning short in and out of the driveway and corners is what kills the tread.

IMO, always go for the most plys you can for safety's sake.

Lots of side wall tread, trailer tires need to be stiff, so there's no sideways sway!! Les Schwab tire, mostly all over the western States are very handy to have around, fix flats and rotate tires for free! great service.......nope don't work for them,

What size tires are they 14",15" or 16". Some LT tires in the 16" class will work will. I installed Michelin XP RIBS on my last trailer LT245/75R/16E with excellent results. These were installed on a 318 SAB Cougar with 16" wheels.

With a 22' travel trailer, I'm guessing you need 15" tires. The selection of quality tires is very limited for 15" wheels. About the best you can probably do is the Maxxis M8008. Good luck!!

holy thread resurrection!!!! from 01!!! good job.
i use Hurculese trailer tires, most trailer tires dry rot around the 4-5 year mark, mine have lasted 6 years no signs of rotting, tread still looks great as well. Much better then the maxxis that came off it. and or LT truck tires.

That may well be the case when it comes to resistance to sidewall cracking. In RV applications, the primary problem most people experience is tread separation under heavier loads and at highway speeds. If you frequent the RV forums, the Maxxis M8008 seems to be a problem solver in that regard. As I stated, GOOD 15" trailer tires are hard to come by, and the Maxxis seems to be one of the better ones for RV use insofar as reliability is concerned. Most users who have switched to them report good results.

Before buying new tires for the TT take you rig fully loaded to a truck scale and get the weights for each axle on both the truck and trailer.
This will confirm the proper load range for your tires and let you know if you need to adjust your trailer's tongue height. So far I've had excellent service with Sailun tires. I've had terrible service with Big O name brand trailer tires with frequent tread separation.
