Large 5'ver for sale

Man, what a weekend. I hauled both my 4-wheelers to Lake Grapevine to ride with a friend on Saturday from my house, about 60 miles away. Going there was OK. Coming home is another story. I'm in Denton still about 40 miles away from my house and the bearings come loose on the right wheel of the trailer. This is a homemade 5x8 trailer with mobile home axels and wheels. Since I don't normally carry around a spare mobile home wheel:) I had to leave the trailer on the side of the road and rent a u-haul to get both 4-wheelers home. I did take the license plate off the trailer before I left though. So Sunday morning I drive 100 miles to my dad's to get another wheel, then back to Denton to return the uhaul. On the way the ball clamp worked loose on the trailer and it flies off the ball and is held on by 1 safety chain, slinging itself all over the road. After dodging all the other cars I get pulled over and some nice guys stop and help me get it back on my ball, and I return on my way, a lot slower. I get the uhaul returned and get back to where my trailer was. The key word here is "was," because it is no longer there. I found a cop and he called in to see if it was in their impound lot... nope. Some SOB stole my trailer:{ Oh well, I guess I can build another one. Hope you guys had a better weekend. Riding 4-wheelers was fun though.

Cody,

Just a suggestion :) - on another forum, a discussion came up about using mobile home axles & wheels on trailers. A trailer fabrication company employee mentioned that these components are usually designed for "one trip" - just to get the mobile home to its permanent location. You might consider some Dexter components or equivalent when you build that next trailer.

Oh definately. My dad built this trailer mainly to use around his house, a farm trailer, not really for pulling at high speed, but I did it anyway. I plan on using Dexter or the like and putting a common hub on there so accept a chevy 5 lug wheel, so spares will be easy to change out. I'm also thinking of putting two axels in tandem in case I do have a blowout.

When I built my car hauler I used mobile home axles... two 6000lb axles on a trailer that weighed about 5500lbs with the car on it. Never had any trouble with it in thousands of miles of towing. I did have the bolts holding one of the Bud wheels come loose once, but that was because of personal oversight. :( I took them off the trailer when it was rumored that they were going to be outlawed here, but that never came to pass. The axles I replaced them with had much smaller brakes and it didn't stop as well... The only gripe I had with the mobile home axles was that these particular axles had open backing plates and wouldn't stop if they got wet. I tried to avoid rain. :D
