I was hooking up my brake controller and couldn't get the running lights to work. Traced the harness out and found a relay in the back just above the hitch. there was no red power wire going from the PDB ( the battery charging wire for your trailers batteries)

I had to jump out the relay to get the trailer running lights to work.

This is a Canuck truck, so maybe this is something they use up there. my 99 had a tow package and there was no relay in the back, weird?

That wiring harness most likely came from the dealer. My '99 with factory trailer tow pkg didn't have the relay either, but my '01 without factory tow pkg has the relay because the dealer installed the tow wiring.

FWIW the wiring harness from the big junction under the driver's side right behind the front wheel to the rear of the truck is different if you have the factory installed tow pkg or not. I guess DC saved some pennies by not including all the wire for the trailer tow pkg...

I can't really say for sure. I haven't had any problems with my factory harness, except for when my ground came loose in my plug. That got ugly. Took out all of my fuses for the lights. Other than that, which was my fault, I have used it for 4 different trailers with and without electric brakes.
