Trailer wiring question

What guage wire is the standard for trailers with a 7 pin plug. the local NAPA sold me 7 conductor wire with 6 - 12 guage and 1 - 10 guage wire. The problem is that I can not fit the wires into the terminals on the plug, the wires are too large or the terminals are too small. I purchased a 7 pin RV style plug with the flat terminals from NAPA. Are there different RV style plug that accept larger conductors?

I rewired my 16' flat bed and used 6-12 gauge on it. The plug I used had just a flat plate that screwed down on the wire terminal. You could put about what ever gauge wire you wanted into it. Try and go to a shop that installs hitches and the like they will have a better style plug. I think I paid around $12 for the one I bought, picked it up a Tractor Supply.

RV Plug wiring

Have you tried to seperate each wire into 2 sections (like a horseshoe or U shape) and slip in around the screw of the connector? The wiring size you have is very common.

Is there room on the plug housing to use crimp ring lugs under the screws? If so here's what I do: Tin the stripped wire BUT only the last 1/16inch to avoid fraying. Crimp on the correct size lug for the wire size. Liquid lectric tape on the open ends to seal the copper. Tighten under the lugs. You'll need to have enough sirspace for the crimp sleeve to stand behind the screw terminals in the housing. But it makes a wicked stout, weatherproof hookup!! And yess, I'm allergic to bad wiring jobs!

I tried that and was concerned that they may be too weak. I think that I may have to rethink the crimp connectors. The other problem that I am having is getting the wire to fit through the hole in the back of the plug.



Are there any other options?
