I’ve noticed this problem for a couple years. Does it year round in any temp. When I first start the truck (after sitting for a couple days) and put it into drive or reverse, I need to give it a good amount of throttle to get it to move and then it does not move all that well for the first couple seconds. Once it gets moving , she has no problem after that. It almost seems like the transmission is slipping. When driving it locks up fine and shifts fine. Truck has about 65k miles on it. Was used to tow a 5th wheel camper for the first 55k miles of its life (not sure of the size). I use it pretty much to pickup wood and stuff for projects around the house and for bad weather.

This spring I am going to drop the transmission pan and replace the oil , filter and pan itself (pan is rusted and looks like it might be leaking a little. ) Fluid levels look fine, other than when I first start it and first put it in drive or rev it won’t move without a good amount of throttle. .

Any suggestions? Anyone run into an issue like this before? Its a 2500 Club Cab with auto.

Might try putting it in neutral to get some tras fluid flowing back up into the torque converter before moving the truck.

Might be just draining trans fluid back into the pan sitting for an extened amount of time.

Sounds like your fluids draining back while sitting. In stock form, the 47RE does not pump fluid in park, so while the engine is running and warming up, the transmission's doing nothing. Try putting it in neutral before trying to put it in gear. It shouldn't take but 15-20 seconds in neutral to get the fluid back where it needs to be, then put it in drive or reverse.

EDIT: JDiehl, you must type faster than I do. :-laf

My truck does that. The torque converter is draining because a check valve is sticking. Someplace there a TSB explaining why it's not a warranty issue. Like Big Papa said, there's no flow in park. I just put it in drive and wait for the truck to start moving at idle. I don't use my truck every day. Some days it just goes and some days it takes a minute.

If the truck has been setting for a day or more you need to start up, put it in neutral for 30-45 seconds and then put it in gear. Your check valve is sticking open allowing fluid to drain out of the TC. The check valve can be very problematic and is one of the primary causes of transmiision failure. Taht valve was added after consumer complaints about the ex act problem you are describing. The valve is a pretty "cheesy" part and when it sticks closed it won't allow the ATF to circulate. Your valve needs to be replaced, or even better, removed. If you do a search on the topic you'll find ways to remove the valve. Removing the valve and having to let the ATF circulate after the truck has been sitting is better than having to replace the transmission. Some transmission builders remove this valve when installing a remanufactured transmission. Others will not warranty their transmission without the valve being removed.

Torque converter drainback. My 1996 V-10 dually did it all the time. 10-15 seconds in neutral after starting it when it's been sitting for anything over a few days was part of the normal startup routine. It isn't worth worrying about IMHO - just accept it as a normal operating characteristic of the 47RE and live with it.

I had an old Chevy that did that, REAL bad - wouldn't move for about a minute, then wouldn't shift ranges for about a mile down the road. Bad seal(s) in torque converter, added a good name brand transmission sealer, and problem was completely cured over about a 4 day period, never had another problem with it for the next 2 years I owned it...
