My '92 1st gen. 3/4 ton with manual 5 speed just quit on me. It started a few days ago with growling in reverse and a few forward gears. I called this morning and made an appointment for this week at the dealership. This afternoon, being my only vehicle, I had to run an errand about 10 miles. On the way home, besides the growling (reverse, 2nd, 3rd and 5th gears), it started making a very loud high-pitched squealing sound. I turned onto my road a third mile from my house and when I downshifted to third, the truck wouldn't move. Tried 2nd and no go. I tried 4th and got it to roll but it sure smelled bad (clutch, I presume). Good news is it's in my driveway. Bad news is it's there to stay until repaired.

I've read some of the forum posts, but not being a mechanic, I can't tell if this is a throw-out bearing, the entire clutch unit or possibly the whole transmission dead. Any ideas are appreciated.

Thanks:(

I think you will find that the cluster gear has fallen out of place due to roller bearing failure.

This happened to my 1992 5-sp at 156k miles, clutch was still good, put it all back together, ran like pickle seeder.

The fire drill is to pull the trans and try to find a good replacement-which I did, right off of this site.
