I do all my own work. I did my trans adjustment about 3,000 miles ago. The manual
says to be precise with the inch pound torque
adjustment of the bands. I had used a very old inch pound torque wrench given to me by my father. I notice now that the shift between 1st and 2nd clunks. The manual cautions of over torque of the band adjustments. What damage can occur if the bands are to loose or to tight? Any auto tran
experts out there who can add there comments?

I use the travel method of adjustment, use a 1/4" allen wrench between the servo apply pin and the lever(front servo) and snug the adjuster bolt hand tight, remove wrench. adjust rear servo to same 1/4"travel,can use short ruler to measure. HTH My first post, am DTT dealer and installer in Tex. Good on transmissions, not so sharp on computers.

Don't let inarush76 fool you. He is good on computers and great on transmissions.

I have learned a lot of lessons the hard way and think I might be able to help out here.

On one of my transmissions, I wore the second gear band down so much that the support between the adjustment bolt and the band feel out into the pan and caused me to lose 2nd gear. The week or so before the support fell out my 1-2 shifts were VERY hard. There is a chance that your band is too loose.

DTT and inarush76 don't use the torque wrench method because it isn't always accurate. Your bolt could have bad threads or dirt in the threads causing it to show 72 in-lbs, when infact the second gear band isn't tight. A much better method is to drop the pan and check for 1/4" free play like inarush76 mentioned above.

Many thanks to the both of you for the input. I will drop the pan as soon as I get a free clear weather weekend.
