Diesel spills at pump station

An estimated 760 gallons of diesel fuel has spilled at a trans-Alaska oil pipeline pump station on the Dalton Highway.
The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation reports that a fuel line ruptured on one of the generators used to supply power to the pump station at Mile 55 of the highway.
"Due to vibrations from the generator, the fuel line just rubbed awhile and caused a release," said Amanda Leffel of the DEC's spill prevention and response program.
The spill occurred Monday evening but was at first believed to be much smaller.
About 417 gallons of fuel has been recovered inside the generator module using sorbent pads and a vacuum truck. The module is leased from Pacific Detroit Diesel Allison, which will be held responsible for the cleanup.
An estimated 300 square feet of gravel has been affected by the spill, the agency said. The contaminated gravel will be removed once the module is taken out.
Before that can happen, another generator module must be delivered and installed to provide power for Pump Station 6. The generator might not be moved for several weeks to months, DEC said.
