I'm curious as to how one would go about performing transmission band adjustments on a '92 CTD D250. My guess is that it's good insurance to do PM ,no? I'll wana be pullen sumthen' one'o these days!

Any advice is appreciated!

Thanks, Scott

The adjustment on these transmissions is NOT for wear. It's for shift timeing. If the band is too tight there is a point where the band and clutches are both holding. In other words a bind. If it is too loose there is a point where they both have let go. A short slip in other words. If it's shifting ok don't mess with it.

Dodge recommended service interville is every 36k do a fluid change and band adjustment. If you are towing heavy I would recommned doing it around 15k.

Thinking like that might get you a dead transmission around 100k.

Greenleaf,

I now have 200K on my stock transmission and it is still ticking along. Philip helped me adjust it the first time, but I think I can do it from now on. When you have the pan and fluid dropped, you can adjust the rear band. Loosen the lock nut 5 to 6 turns. Tighten the adjustment screw to 72 in-lbs. Then back the screw out 2 full turns. Retighten the lock nut to 25 ft-lbs. To adjust the front band, locate the adjustment on the left side of the transmission case above the throttle levers. Loosesn the lock nut 4 to 5 turns. It may need oiled to make it turn smoothly. Tighten adjustment screw to 72 in-lbs. Back out 2. 5 turns and tighten the locknut to 30 ft-lbs. From my limited experience, the lock nuts are a pain to get a wrench on, let alone a torque wrench. Just snug them up well so the set screw doesn't turn. Since I tow quite a bit I change my transmission fluid and filter every 12-15K, or every third engine oil change. Hope this helps.

If I were you I would check with one of the after market transmission gurus before messing with it. If you look at one of the bands you will see that it is way too thin to allow any wear at all. If you do decide to adjust it the service manual is correct for the rear band. The front band is better adjusted with a 1/4" allen wrench used as a feeler gauge between the piston rod and the band end.
