I rebuilt my trans a few months ago & I just used the shimms that were in there Im getting a rattle at low rpms in all but 4th which is loose main & mabey countershaft bearings

the place I bought the input shaft, countershaft, bearings & synchros from cant get the shimms they say they di what I did reuse whats there & the dealer cant either

there is a trans & diff shop in asheville 16 miles away but I dont want to go there & pull the rear cover off the trans there to match them up from their

wall O shimms

do any of you know who might have these main & countershaft bearing preload shimms? so I can just have them here & do it in a more comfortable environment than a parking lot in asheville?

thanks

JAK:)

use rear end shims

I found some of my rear end shims to be very close on id and od.

if its making noise start taking out the thinest shim first and check preload with dial indecator or by feel... should not bind and should turn by hand... i've done one and will do another shortly

good luck

I apriciate you taking the time to answer

I have to corect you though you add shimms to preload the bearings

on the old 435 NP you removed shimms from between the front plate/TO collar the case to tighten them also on the 435 the rear bearing was a ball bearing so you dident want to preload the front tapered bearing that much

on the getrag the shimms are between the races & the rear plate so adding them tightens them & they are all tapered bearings so you can get them pretty tight

you would be suprised how tight you can get tapered roller bearings & get long life theres a spec for saab pinion bearing preload where you wrap a rope around the 5 inch pinion housing with the gear in a vise & pull the rope with a scale & it should take 10 lbs of pull to unwrap it now thats some preload:--)

on tractor trailor wheel bearings you run the nuts down with an impact to preload them

sorry to come on & start arguing

but I just wanted the info to be more corect

take care

Yes, I've been wondering about this. I'm going to need some, too. My friend had a machinist make some for him last time he did a Getrag. I may do the same thing if they aren't readily available... Anybody tried Standard Transmissions?

the thing to do is go to a truck trans & diff rebuilder when you have the trans apart & match them up from their

wall O shimms get an assortment of thin & thick onesfor both the countershaft & mainshaft

mine fealt ok to beginn with but loostened up after a lil while so Id say set them a lil on the tight side so you feel some resistance = a couple foot lbs +-

rotational resistance

Ill look into standard trans though & get back to the thread
