Archived Trans Blown, Ideas?

2001 TCD 2500, automatic 4x4, I go out to investigate "strange noises" wife reports truck making yesterday when she drove it. I crank up and immediately there are multiple explosions, cracks, pops, grinding, trans shifts into something twice, sound ratchets up, noisy crescendo, then only sound of diesel idling. All this while the transmission is in Park. I shift into R to get out of the barn and the truck is dead as a darlik. It won't move, apparently no gears.

Anybody know a good trans shop in or near the Birmingham, Alabama, area or a source for a used transmission? How many type transmissions will work behind a 2001 Cummins 4x4?

Questions are easy; it's giving or getting the right answer that's hard.

Did you pull the flywheel/torque converter inspection plate on the bottom of the bell housing to see if the flex plate is intact ?. Might be the first thing to check.

Will it still start now? If it tore up the flex plate starting is not going to sound good. You can pull the cover on the front bottom of the trans to see if there is any FOD in there, if so it has to come out. You might get lucky and just need a flex plate.

Trans shop is going to be whatever you can find in your local area, even a good mechanic can swap these things out easily.

Is your truck stock? How many miles on the failed trans? A stock replacement from the dealer is a good option for stock applications.
