I have and 05 3700 dually, NV5600. I am getting a chatter in the trans at low speed when power is applied. Is this normal? I am going to change trans and diff. fluid and wondering if I should put any particular additive in it. I just bought the truck and it has 48,000 miles on it. If anyone has any thoughts on this I would appreciate imput. thanks.

Is this a clutch chatter or transmission chatter.....

Engineers who design pickups, and trucks suggest the following:

Please remember that proper clutch engagement to prevent chatter is to release the clutch pedal without adding power... . allow the engine to pick up the load... . once the clutch pedal is fully released add power... even pulling the heaviest loads you should be able to do this in low gear except on grades.

This is extremely important when backing a trailer or loaded truck.

Hope this helps.....

The NV5600 is a noisy trans. Some growl when slightly lugging etc. is normal. Some of the better quality fliuds for it like the Amsoil,Redline etc. seem to quiet it some but not totaly.

Thanks jelag and DPKetchum for your comments. I don't think the chatter is in the clutch because when it occurs is after the clutch is fully engaged (foot off) and power is applied. I am somewhat relieved, in this instance, that the NV5600 is just a noisy transmission. This is the first one I have owned. I have ordered enough Amsoil to change the fluid in the trans. and the diff. hoping that will help. HAS ANYONE TRIED LUCAS OIL STABALIZER FOR TRANSMISSION ADDED TO THE SYNTHETIC FLUID. I thought if the Amsoil doesn't help I might try some of that. Thanks again for the input.

OK guys. Thanks for the input. I feel better about my transmission now. The noise is surely not something that I can't live with. I have ordered Amsoil syncromesh MTF and will change it out because I feel it is time to do that. I have also ordered the filter kit from Geno's. Even if this doesn't cure the noise problem I can feel secure that my transmission is taken care of.

I have an 07. 5 with a G56 and I also have been dealing with a chatter. In first and reverse with or with out gas I get a nasty vibration (feels like axle wrap up in sand) even before I start moving. I have had the dealer replace the entire clutch assembly and flywheel and the new one is even worse than the last. It is at the dealer right now getting a new computer because the truck shuts it self off as well as to deal with the clutch issue so we will see what they come up with. More to come...

If you are getting a low speed chatter, I would say it is not a transmission issue at all! One of your rear U-joints is starting to sieze up. It will give you chatter under moderate accellaration in 2nd and 3rd gear. Dodge will want over around $100 plus install for the one on the rear axle. You can pick one up at the local parts store for around $23. Heat up the bolts before you try to take them off though. They have lock tight on them.

Ok I too have a shudder problem with my 04. 5 Quad Cab 4X4 Dually I have had the shudder since it was new but now it is getting worse at about 29000 miles. This is with the clutch fully engaged and then putting even moderate power to it. I am leaning to the u joints also or could it be in the carrier bearing?

I would say yours is also a u-joint issue. They always dry up on the 3rd gen Dodges. If you wiggle the driveshaft, it will often feel tight like normal. But when you take it off, you will likely have one half of the u-joint siezed up. The only time I have seen a common problem with the carrier bearing is on the mega cabs. They will shudder loaded but not unloaded, or unloaded but not loaded depending on the shims used. They are having a hard time trying to fix the mega cabs. I think the best sulution for the mega might be 4 link with adjustable air ride to keep the ride height consistant. Of course that option is expensive!!
