today the short 6" length of rubber hose in my trans cooler lines that runs straight up into the bottom of the heat exchanger on the side the engine blew. (1996 3500 auto)

It looks all original (340,000 miles). So my question, it has those quick connect fittings with two plastic tabs. How do I get them apart? (i must be old and blind)

And can I just put a good rubber hose with clamps back? I mean is the bottom of the heat exchanger threaded so I could just screw in a hose barb?

This is in a hard place to see, so I dont know what my options are. I done want to un-screw a fitting that is not threaded..... I have poured over my shop manual, searched these forums, I find no details...

I had to replace mine awhile back, went with the hose barb and rubber hose made for automatic trans. If I remember right you squeeze the plastic tabs and pull the fitting out. But it wasn't as easy as it sounds, I remember saying a few words that women and children should never hear.
