My auto trans dipstick hits the bottem of the pan, is then pushed back up so the top of the tube is not sealed. I called Don the service manager at Frahm Dodge, in Norco, Calif. He told me that its made that way, to vent the trans. The stick # is 52107769AA. Does anyone know the # of the correct dipstick, for the 98 Ram and maybe the factory TBS # for this problem.

Yeah, mine used to do that. I shortened it where it was hitting the pan. Ground the tip there also so it would still slide nicely down the dipstick tube. That's a reasonable answer from the service manager but maybe you should ask him about the vent that the transmission has above the front pump. Oh, maybe he's never seen one.

If you just cut 1/2" off the dipstick, will the add & full marks still be in the right place or will they need to be moved up.

You can leave the marks alone. I personally have never seen a problem with a transmission thats a little over the full mark & I've had a shop for 17 years, in the profession for 27. Just as long as it's not 2-3 quarts over so it gets in the geartrain. On the flip side I believe the amount that has to be removed on the stick would be about a pint anyway. IMO not enough to make a difference.

My service manager told me that the stick measures from the top down, so snipping it off has no affect on the reading. Makes sense when you think about it. Then if you put a deep pan on, it's still measuring full the same even though there's more in the pan.

Mine quit doing it when I installed the MagHytech double deep transmission pan. Of course there are cheaper ways, but I think the MagHytech is the BEST way. :D :D :D

I see the way the pan is made. Right where the tube enters, there is dimple in the pan that creates a shelf about 1/2 the depth of the pan. That is where the dipstick hits bottem, not allowing the dipstick callar on top to seat on the tube. If I cut 1/2" off the dipstick, letting the dipstick move down, I will be lowering the fluid leval that much. Does anyone know exactly where the fluid leval should be in relation to the top of pan (bottem of case). I want to get this right. I sure don't want to create a problem. Thanks for the help guys.

I had a 99 2500 with the auto. trans. it used to pop out. I learned from the TDR about cutting the dip stick. I cut the stick with my main concern of keeping dust out of the transmission.

I happen to see my old truck the other day and flagged the new owner down. He has 57,??? miles on his truck many of them pulling a 6 horse trailer and has had no problem. The deep pan was not availble back then or I would have bought one of them. The more fluild in a auto transmission the better along with the cooler the better.

I would buy the deeper pan and if I couldn't do that then I would cut off an 1/2 inch off the dip stick.

Hope this helps.

See Ya

Chris

Thank's guys for the input on this. I pulled the trans pan on both of my 98 Ram trucks. The dipstick extended 2" down from the case. The shelf in the pan was only 1 1/2 ". I cut off 1/2". Now my refill is 6 qt. instead of 7 1/2 qt. I also welded on drain plugs.
