I've been chasing an OD issue off and on forever, had gotten some improvement with electronics replacement last year but it's gotten worse and worse until fourth gear rarely happens. Also, when it stays in 3rd it does not lock up, but I can lock it up with my L/U switch. I just did another service to replace the governor pressure solenoid, governor pressure sensor, transmission speed sensor, and for the first time the overdrive solenoid/converter clutch solenoid.
Last year I did all but the OD sol/conv clutch sol, and also the TPS. I have a DTT trans so cleaned up the wiring and checked voltage on the DTT regulator, and it's perfect.
I put the electronics in with new filter, buttoned the pan back on and wanted to put the truck in neutral to push it out of the garage to put fluid in. I had disconnected both batteries, ground and power, and reconnected before turning the key on to put truck in neutral. I had not added any fluid.

When I turned on the key I immediately heard a weird buzzing sound coming from the pan, sounding like a short. I've never heard that before but have never turned the key on without fluid in it. Hm. I went ahead and put 8 quarts in and turned the key back on and the sound was the same. AAARGH!

I drained and removed the pan again, and swapped out the gov pressure solenoid with my old one, turned the key on and the same sound. When I touch that solenoid I can feel it buzzing.

I've checked and rechecked everything I installed and just can't see a problem. I've also done these components multiple times and never had this happen. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who's experienced this...

The old one I'd experimented with was from a few years ago, and it still buzzed (cycled? clicked?). But if I put in the one I took out yesterday morning that sound goes away.
What the...?!?!

Just in case anyone's following this, it's resolved. I got all new electronics from a different source but the noise remained the same. I put it all back together anyway, then fiddled with my DTT volt regulator. I'd bumped it down to 4.5 from the normal 4.6-4.7 a week or so ago to try and fix multiple shifting issues. When I turned it back up today the weird buzzing changed, then went away!
I added fluid and test drive has everything working perfectly.
Case closed. :)
