Trans fluid level - How low is low?

My trans fluid level reads at the bottom of the hatching on the dipstick. My question is how much fluid does it take to get to the top of the hatch marks? Quart? Pint? I guess I could just put a little in and check it, but I'm guessing someone here knows...

If it is at the bottom of the hatch marks cold I would not add as the fluid will expand some when hot. It will be about a pint ot fill. bg
