I have always used dodge transmission fluid in the past but am preparing for a 4. 000 mile roadtrip this weekend and was unable to get some for a fluid and filter change. I got a case of Valvoline dextron III instead do you guys think this is going to be okay. What do you guys use? Thanks.

I use Dexron III. It will work fine for you as well. IF you get lockup shudder drain out a couple quarts of the Dexron and add ATF+3 to replace it, should only take 2 or 3 quarts to smooth it out.

Bombers

Boy changing AT fluid every 10k, is western WA driving that hard on it?

25k Dexron changes have gotten my totally stock transmission over 200k.

Last trans service I did, I did a little research. At work I can get Dextron/Mircron III for dirt cheep. ATF III is almost $30 a case around here. What I found is this: The Dextron is a "grabbier" fluid. The ATF III is a more slippery fluid. The Dextron can cause the clutches to chatter instead of (as it's designed) slip slightly into place. They make an Additive (I can't remember the name now) that the parts stores have that can alter the chemical composition of Dextron to work in our vehilces. If I remember right it took me one bottle of it at about $10. I'm SURE I saved at least that in trans fluid.

Spend the money

Just use Amsoil transmission fluid. Lasts longer, runs cooler. Its expensive but excellent stuff for heavy towing. 90k plus miles and going strong.

I'm currently using Dexron-III and a black bottle of Lubegard in my trany.

I had the trany rebuilt at 95k miles after owning the truck for over 50k. The converter was burned, but the rest of the tranismission was in pretty good condition.

I'm not sure if the previous owner did any service, but I had a bottle of Lugegard RED added to the trany shortly after I bought it.
