Just wanted to thank all that had offered help with the "Trans Help" thread. Truck is back on the road (FINALLY)with many thanks to Dave Goerend for his help in diagnosing the problem.

Even though non of the product had come from Dave, he offered his help, and even called several times to ensure that things were going ok. The best customer service you will ever find.

Thanks Dave, and to all others that offered help.

Rodney:

I'm glad to hear you got your truck
fixed. What kind of parts did you
end up going with?

Currently have a Dunrite convertor and a Transgo shift kit. Will probably try a different Valve body at a later date, as the Transgo setup is a little harsh shifting 2/3 and 3/2. All else seems ok with VB, but I would like the race car to stay in the trailer, not come flying out when it shifts!

The convertor definitly puts the power down better then stock, but still seems to stall a little too high (around 2000 rpm at full throttle), and has a slight vibration at idle.

The vibration is not usualy the converter's fault. It indexes into a hole in the Dodge flexplate, and that hole is sometimes off. When the stall gets a lot under 2000 full power, you can end up with sluggish takeoff at moderate power or if the engine does not make LOTS of torque below there. I suggest that you call Tony at Dunrite for recommendations to match your Ram.

Hey Joe,
FYI torque converters can be out of balance and cause vibrations. When TC’s are built from the factory the internal components are balanced as shown in the photograph. Those are OEM factory stators. The holes on the stators illustrate the balancing.

Not only are the internal components balanced but after the entire converter is welded together it is then externally balanced as a unit.

Most after market TC’s are not internally balanced, so when the OEM stators are milled and pump and turbine are altered they are not re-balanced as individual components and then as a whole. They are only externally balanced after the tc is welded together.

I am impressed that Mr. Brooks picked up on that vibration. The average individual wouldn’t generally pick up on that. When we build our stators we send them out to be balanced by a premier engine shop before assembling our TC’s.

This is not a practice common to the diesel industry TC builders as the diesel is a rough idling engine to begin with and the average individual wouldn’t pick up on it.

However we know the importance of balanced components, it’s the old drag racer in me, kind of like a balanced engine generally runs longer than an unbalanced engine.

The vibration is only noticeable at idle and slightly above in N, or P. Have not consciously thought to check in D, R etc, but I believe it goes away as soon as there is a load on the motor / convertor. I am not concerned unless there is a possibilty of this hurting the convertor, trans, or rear main bearing etc.

Bill, currently race mud drags, but am looking into a asphalt dragster for 2001. (No decisions yet) There is a neat heads up class for dragsters here in New England called Pro Comp, that is basicly 200mph, 6. 5's 1/4's. Thinking of putting motor and possibly trans into a dragster to try this. Believe my combo will run close to those numbers, but not sure yet. Asphalt sounds boring, but a lot cleaner! And 200mph is not possible in the mud. We are currently running just over 100mph in 200ft, 2. 8 secs. #ad

Rodney,

I know that class, my partner John's wife Linda drives a rail in what we call in div 6 top comp.
Its not the only the drag racing parts that make it fun, its the crews , the after hours visiting etc. we really enjoy.
Good luck with your new project, i think you will really like it.
Beats the dirt in the face,

Bill, Check your email, didn't want to clutter this post with drag race talk.

What's everyones thoughts on the convertor vibration, be concerned or not? Hate to take it out again, but will if I have to.

Rodney

Rodney,
Every converter is balanced externally when you buy it. The only components within the tc that can cause vibration as a general rule of thumb is the turbine or the tc clutch apply plate. If those two components have been tampered with this can cause a noticable vibration. These components are very close to the centerline of your drive train, and should not cause you any problem but you may want to check with an engine builder and get their opinion. I dont really know how much out of balance the cummins engine can take.
