my brothers 97 has the 5spd in it and on the way home today i notice a rattle in 5th gear while into the throttle a bit. not sure what it could be any ideas?!?!

Read here. Not the same symptoms but likely a very similar problem. My guess is you'll loose fifth soon. How many miles on the truck? How long since the transmission oil was changed?

I have the same rattle to in 5th gear and I've had the updated fifth gear nut put on awhile back. I too think that's she's ready to go. I guess it will be time for a rebuild soon. Anybody else have any input

not sure on last trans oil change. truck is about to turn 94k miles. in that thread he said it was a whine noise, this is more like a rattle. is this a symptom of the 5th gear nut how can you tell? what is the best oil to use in it (not trying to start a war here) and how much does it take?

I currently have the same noise in fifth and had the revised nut put on only a few thousands miles ago... hope mine isnt about to go again.

The nut isn't the problem, Go to Quad 4x4 .com. Its the gear and main shaft. my 94 has a 97 transmission in it (see thread about 230 ford inj. )and I am rebuilding mine now. on my 97 the 5th gear nut was staked and locktited, so 5th gear wore into the main shaft and wore next to it under the output bearing. Quad 4x4 has pictures, mine looks just like em and I bet yours does to(not trying to be pesimistic). Sorry, but on the upside its not aa tough transmission to rebuild and parts are not that expensive. good luck.
