Trans Oil and Rear Oil

I bought fast coolers for trans and a mag-hytec rear cover. The service manual says to only use mopar trans oil and gear oil. Has any one used different oil in your trans and rear? If so what brand did you use? Thanks.

I find it hard to believe that Dodge could invalidate your warranty if you use another manufacturers products. Like Amsoil says in their brochures they have never had components fail because of their products. I am running 75w90 synthetic in the rear and am getting ready to put series 3000 synthetic 10w30 in the transmission. I have been using the stuff in my trucks for 17 years and no problems.

While Amsoil (or any other manufacturer of gear oil) may be able to make the claim that their oil has never caused a failure, the customer is the one caught in the middle when DC tries to deny a claim, and they have your truck as a hostage.



The Pennzoil Synchromesh meets the Dodge spec for the trans and quotes the DC part number so you are ok to use that. The manual may recommend the Mopar product for the axle but the spec they quote is GL5 75W90 synthetic. As long as you use that, you have met the requirement.



Will the component fail if you don't use a specified fluid? Probably not. Will DC use it as an excuse to deny your warrantee claim? Maybe. Ultimately it is your choice if you want to take the risk.

I used MOBILE1 75W-90 synthetic when I changed my real axle fluid. Afterwards, I noticed the asterick on the MOBILE1 label by the word 'synthetic'. It says 'exclusive of the carrier oil', which I now understand can mean anywhere from 5 to 20%!

I would like to hear other's . 02 on whether the MOBILE1 meets DC's requirement for synthetic. Anyone???

When I talked to AAM engineer on the fact the the rear end was low on fluid, I told him that the truck was on the rack and I had topped it off with Mobil1, he said that was a great product. Better then most all other synthetics out there. Apparently they must have tested it? He didn't say, I am assuming...

Mobil1 is a GREAT product, use it ALL the time in my gas products, compressors, etc. Going on 20+ years. I just wish I could find Delvac1 locally.

This thread caught my eye,since i discovered that my rear fluid was low yesterday. Was going to the dealer but i think i will just top off in my shop. Sounds like the Delvac or Mobil products are the ticket?Thanks.

I attended a seminar given by an engineer from Lubrication Engineer's, at May Madness. He said that He would love to sell us one of his products, for the 6-speed, but, that they did not have anything that was compatible. I believe it was the syncro's that were compromised if you did not use the correct oil. He thought it was important to use the proper oil. Ithink it was the yellow metals(brass) that needed the special lube.

PBeaudoin - Thanks for the info! I've heard a lot of things about various brands of synthetics and additives to them, such as friction modifiers (which, I believe, Mobile1 does have), and if they are okay to use or not. Nice to get a reply, as you did, straight from AAM saying it is a good brand to use.

Trans & Rear Oil

I will use the Mopar ATF+4 for the auto from the dealership unless I start seeing it in the auto parts store shelf. The rearend oil as long as it is showing the GL-5 stamp of approval you can by it at the auto parts stores now. Getting ready to change mine tomorrow with the Castrol Syntec 75w-90 full synthetic at $7. 59 a quart. It has the GL-5 rating. Dealership stuff is tooooo high.
