Hi Everyone,

I am a new member and had a question about transmission fluids. I have a 2001 HO 3500 Ram with the six speed transmission and 91,000. I got the truck back in December and thought it would be a good idea to check and change all fluids. After looking around and calling the local Dodge Dealer about transmission fluid, they told me that it would run $18. 95 a quart. Sounded kind of high. I call Lucas Oil and they told me to use there 85w 90 Syn Transmission oil and add one quart of there oil stablizer. Now I find out after reading the Start up kit sent to me by TDR the the oil should only be a 30w Syn. I am going to change out the oil today. The truck has about 250 miles on the transmission with this oil in it. Could I have done any damage by using the incorrect oil. :confused::{

Prolly not if you didn't tow anything too heavy and it doesn't grind or anything but you will wanna get that oil out... it's too heavy. The 5-speed and 6-speed have different style synchros... 6-speed(NV5600) has more of a clutch-style with different yellow metals so you wanna get oil specific for that transmission. Amsoil makes 5w-30 MTF that is specific to the NV5600 and works very well at preventing the infamous 3rd gear grind. Problem is, you may have to order it so it's not as accessable. Not required but I use it and love it.

If you do a search there are tons of threads on this transmission.

Take care of it... parts are hard to come by!

Dumped and filled

Thank for the posts. I would have had to wait on the AMSOL so I used the Mopar oil. Trans is back to shifting great. Thanks again. :):D

Yea, you'll be fine. I guess some guys have had trouble with the mopar stuff once the oil starts to break down(3rd gear grind). I don't think the grind is a big deal, just the clutchpack on the sychro is getting sticky.

Like I said; if ya fish around a bit, you'll find tons of threads on transmission oil.
