Trans & rear axle oil - What brand & where to purchase?

Will be installing new Mag-Hytec covers soon and will need to replace the rear axle and transmission fluids. I have always used the MOPAR ATF +3 for the transmission at about $13. 00 per gallon. Wondering if any other makes (NAPA or ??) that meet the OEM specs are a better price and worth switching to.



What about rear axle fluid? I have heard that "LE" is a very good product, they sell it at Mag-Hytec and reccomend it, costs about $10. 00 per bottle.



Are there any good on-line vendors that sell these fluids? Not really intrested in going the Amsoil route.

I'm running LE 607 in my axles and am extremely happy with it - looks like brand new even after 40,000 miles. Even though it's a straight 90w I've checked it in -10 degree weather and it didn't become a solid like I had halfway expected. You can get it straight from LE in case quantities or from Mag-hytec like you mentioned.

You can get the ATF+3 in just about any parts store. I have used Valvoline, Castrol, Penzoil, and Quaker State ATF+3 and have never paid more than $20 for 3 gallon case (12 quarts). If you watch the sales you can get it as low as $15 for three gallons.



I used Mobil 1 in my axles. I find it hard to believe that anything else would be enough better to make a difference in 300K miles and it is on the shelf here resonably priced. Availability is a big one for me, I am not going to stock enough of the oil for a change or refill if I had a serious leak, a quart or so on hand is all I will ever keep. I refuse to tie up my money on inventory when someone else will, same thing for engine oil. Let the retailers stock it. The more exotic oils leave you with no choice but to stock it or you could be out of luck when you need a bit more.

I'm sure Amsoil is a good product, two reasons I won't use Amsoil though:

#1 - $$ It is pretty expensive.

#2 - I don't believe in extended fluid change intervals, so I'll stick to the conventional lubricants and change them at the factory reccomended intervals.

I understand! However, if you look at the prices of the ATF+3/4, or the rear axle Gearlubes, they are less money when compared to some of the others. Exampleodge Dealer here in town wants $24. 00 per quart for a synthetic gear lube (mopar name) and $28. 00 per quart for ATF+3/4!

Quaker State ATF+3 in the transmission, and Mobil 1 75-90 in the axles is what I use.

Another option is Redline. If you want to go the full synthetic route. It is about $8. per qt for all three, and that is it . They do nooooot charge state taxes and they have free shipping.

You are totally off base here if you think anyone is stupid enought to pay 28. 00 per qt for ATF +3/4. And your Dodge dealer is a complete rip-off if that is what he is charging, which I seriously doubt. Why don't you give us the number so we can confirm that price..... or this just a ploy by you to try and get people to buy Amsoil at or around that price and think they are getting a good deal - GEESH!



I have called three Dodge dealers in my area and I can buy a GALLON, I repeat GALLON, not a quart of Mopar +3 for $11. 00 to $15. 00. This is still a rip-off, when you can buy Quaker State or Valvoline +3 for around $2. 00 per qt and it meets or exceeds the OEM fluid.



I appreciate the fact that you are in business to sell Amsoil and make a living, but at $28. 00+ per quart, not from me - my truck takes 5 gallons (20 QTS) SO THAT WOULD BE, OH, LETS SEE - ABOUT $600. 00 TO CHANGE THE FLUID IN MY PAN & TC, YEAH RIGHT, MY CHECKS IN THE MAIL... . NOT!!

If you tow heavy, Royal Purple full synthetic 85W-140 has LSD friction modifier built in and is available at NAPA. My Dana 80 runs significantly quieter and cooler since the change, and no supplemental Mopar friction modifier was required.

Rusty, What kind of gauge do you have to keep an eye on the temp in the rearend? I would like to check it out the next time we see each other. I have synthetic in transmission and rearend but no gauge on them yet.

My temperature gauge is admittedly subjective - it consists of a strategically placed right hand on the differential cover. I can definitely tell the difference since changing over to synthetic - it's much quieter as well (no "whine" when towing at Interstate speeds).
