I have a 98. 5 Stock 24 valve ISB automatic with 33K on the odometer and pull a 8500 lb 5th wheel. Recently, I noticed that when pulling a long grade and the transmission has automatically shifted back to 3rd and the converter is unlocked ( it pulls great, thats not the problem ) and I crest the top or level out and the transmission shifts back into 4th overdrive, for just an instant before the converter locks up, there is a loud rattle that disappears the instant the lockup is complete and the RPM's drop. Is this a sign that the converter clutch is going or anyone had a similar problem.

I have not had that happen. does it only happen at a certain RPM and only with a load?

you must have some real good hearing to hear that over the sweet sound of the cummins ... if it goes away once it locks then it is inside the TC and may be the beginning of something , could also be slop in the teeth that the lock up clutch disc connects to .

You know. . it could be the same rattle that I have. When I put my truck into reverse I have this noise that is either coming from the transmission lines or the microswitch from the pacbrake. . that almost sounds like one of those springs behind a door in your house. The ones that are mounted on the bottom baseboard that stop the door from hitting the wall... make sense? Boy I wish I could get rid of this rattle.

Any ideas?

Kev

Is it a high speed buzzing/rattle. . kind of like a rattlesnake shakin' it's tail?..... If so it could be the trans line check valve slamming back and forth 'till it settles down and closes when locked up... ... ...

Mopar - Is there anything that I can do to fix it? Bill K put on some clamps on their hoping it would separate the lines enough. . but it started making the racket again. Boy is loud and annoying.

It is a high pitch rattle at about 2700 RPM just as the converter locks up , but it sounds more like a sheetmetal type of noise and it will not do it without the load of the trailor.

kevin , what you are hearing is the cooler lines buzzing , has to do with the increased pressre , some do it , some don't . mine does it i guess , but i can't hear it , dealer noted it on the repair order .

joker i still say its the lockup clutch , its a number of pieces riveted together .
