I was putting my front driveshaft in and hit the Transmission Speed senor and broke the plug/connector out of it...

The truck shifts better now, the the exception of first gear.

What I want to know:

1) Is there something I need to know about installing a new one?

2) Is it going to make the transmission shift correctly still?

The truck is shifting like it did when I bought it 50K miles ago and I love it. . Lockup is concise with no lag or B. S.

It shifts through 2nd gear instead of holding it out FOREVER like it did before.

The two problems the way it is are that Lockup comes 5 mph too soon and 1st gear tachs out before it shifts.

Also, a NAPA part number would be great...

Thanks Guys.

I got it ordered yesterday afternoon. .

Thank you for your help.

IS there anything I need to know about putting this in? Will it bleed fluid until it's in?

Also, is there a mounting depth this thing needs by the form of shims?

Thanks for the help.

Biggy,

Changing the sensor is not hard at all. Remove the hold down bolt that holds the plastic adapter to the transfer case. Then pull the adapter/VSS unit straight out. The gear comes out with it as it just snaps on the end of the adapter. Unbolt the VSS unit from the adapter pull that piece out. If you got new o-rings, lube them with a little transmission fluid. Press the new VSS unit into the adapter without twisting as you can cut the o-ring. Put the gear back on and re-install the adapter in the same position (again without twisting). Note that the pins changed from round to square in later year configurations. Make sure you have the right type of unit (should be round pins) before you bother to pull it out. If only the connector snapped off, you shouldn't have any leaks unless you cracked the rest of the housing or adapter.

Vssman... . we're on two different sensors. .

The one I broke was the TSS (transmission speed sensor). . It's below the fluid level in the transmission body and i'm affriad it will try and bleed to death when i remove it.

I also have dealt with the VSS when I corrected my speedo for the 35's.

Thanks :D

not trying to hijack the thread, but where are both of these sensors at? i ask this because my truck wont shift out of 1st gear unless i let my foot off the pedal but all the rest of the gears are fine. thanks

That's the TSS. . mine would shift hydraulically when I let off the throttle just a little.

It would tach up past 200rpm before a shift came, and then lockup occurred too early(mph wise)

The TSS Is above the crossmember just to the inside of the transfer case linkage. It's a two wire sensore that faces down. It mounts in the transmission body.

The VSS (vehicle speed sensor) mounts in the T-case on a 4wd and is on top of the output shaft assembly. It has a distributor style hold down (on my '96) to hold it in place.

However. . your TSS could be why it doesn't want to shift. Also, mine would shift fine after that first shift, so long as the truck hadn't been shut off. Pull up to a light and stop. . it would shift fine... . Just not that very first shift after startup.

And, very little fluid escaped when I changed mine... so it really isn't a hassle.
