My trans sticks in first gear on the first shift after starting the engine. Then it shifts fine. Turn the engine of and restart it and it will do it again. This has been going on since last fall. I belive the problem is the speed sensor in the trans. I stoped at NAPA and they say they dont have a speed sensor listed in their computer. Anybody know a part number and also where is the sensor located on the trans? Thanks for your help. Any chance it just needs cleaned?

Forgot to add it is my 98. 5 truck with the problem.

I just delt with that problem on friday. Its sure was a output shaft speed sensor. Messy to change bit not hard to do. I dont remember the P/N for it but its called a Output Shaft Speed Sensor.

Picked mine up from Auto Zone. Ohmed the original and got an open reading, bought the new one and it ohmed at 600 if this helps you check the one you have now.

Yeah, Auto Zone has them. At a reasonable price too. Sorry but I don't know the part number but they can look it up for you. LOL.
