Drive train temperatures
My transmissions are both NV 5600s so take this for what it's worth. Empty truck, I see around engine temperature after several hours at interstate speeds. Pulling 23K GCVW I see around 220-240 depending on ambient temperature and engine power output. If its 95 F outside and your climbing the Rocky Mountains it may get a little over 240 in 6th. Shifting to 5th does cause temperatures to lower, but remember your moving slower too, so less friction in the gears. The rear differential runs about 150-160 empty at interstate speeds and its temperature rise is much quicker. Towing as above, it can get to 240 under heavy hill climbing conditions but normally runs about 210-220 (note this is about the same as the Dana 80 with the 75W-140 in my 97 and they both have Mag-Hytec pans on). Transfer case temperatures run 15-50 cooler than the transmission depending one ambient temperature. Basically I think the transfer case is a heat sink for the transmission. Hope this helps Ken Irwin
