I had trans temp gauges installed on both of the '03s after the transmission went out of the QC. The QC has the sensor installed directly into the side of the transmission where a plug once was. That gauge will read up to 130* when at idle but drops all the way down on the road, towing or not. The dually has its probe mounted in the transmission line, that one nvers comes up off of cold so far.

Just wondering what has worked for you guys and what kind of readings to expect. At this point I don't feel like I am getting the right info from the gauges. Any advice is appreciated.

My trans temp sensor is installed in the trans to cooler line. I have an Autometer that measures 140*-280* on the gauge. My first diesel, after the gauges were installed I drove about 50 miles home on freeway. Gauge never moved. I thought it wasnt working. Called the guys that installed and ask what was wrong and was told probably wont get much over 100* empty on the highway. Mine will get to about 160* after 30 minutes in stop/go/stop city traffic. But will always drop below the 140* mark on the highway for any length of time. Highest I have seen it was 175* 100* outside, light load and over an hour in city traffic.

transmission temperatures

What you are seeing is normal. Unless you are backing up a trailer or sitting in stop and go traffic you won't see much increase in temperature if any at all if ambient temp is cold. Cruising with the TC locked up, the transmission produces very little heat and the coolers are relatively large. Plowing snow or 4 wheeling are different applications though. But if the TC is locked up the transmission temperatures will stay <120 F. The senders I have installed are in the Transmission to cooler line. Can't comment on the ones installed in the transmission test ports other that no one port has flow under all transmission operating conditions. My 0. 02. Ken Irwin
